you go out on the boat and do two dives per day, so you should get quite a lot in while your over there. when do you fly out?

Hi, we were there for last week of October in 2004 and I dived with the shortie over-suit part of my 2 piece semi dry.
I think it's 5mm, with a fluffy type lining and has short arms and legs.
With a rash vest underneath I felt fine on all of my dives.

Water temps never dropped below 27C, even at 30m.

If you feel the cold, you maybe want a long sleeved/legged suit. This may also be a wise move to protect arms from sunburn.
A hood is not necessary, but again, would be a good protection from sunburn if you're thinning on top!
Gloves are not allowed - gloved hands are more likely to touch the reef as you won't suffer. Non-gloved hands will be less likely to grab at the reef.

We're going again in 3 weeks, and I'm off to get the following essentials tomorrow:-
  • Imodium
  • factor 45 face/lip/neck sunscreen - use it on face/neck, ears, back of hands
  • Currency - Egyptian Pounds and Euros (4EGP lunch on dayboats per person)

Quote:
drink water like it is going out of fashion - but only sealed bottled water.
We dived with Emperor and they recommended drinking at least 4 or 5 litres of water per day to remain properly hydrated. The day boats have tea/coffee, soft drinks and water included:-
- make sure you grab enough water as it may run out if it's a long day (take a couple of litres of your own)
- avoid tea as it's a diuretic
- I don't like swigging coke between dives as all that gas expands when you ascend!

Watch out for the airport car park - our bus was at the furthest point possible and one of the wheels of my (cheap) dive bag were busted by the time we got there. I've got one with shoulder straps now and will be carrying it on my back if the bus isn't right by the door!

The Thisltegorm from a day boat is normally a 3:30am pickup, 5am ropes off and you get there at around 11am. Two dives on it and then back at port for around 7pm. You'll be knackered but it is worth it.

Day boats are not the best way to do the wrecks TBH, I think the Dunraven, the Yolanda and Million Hope are the main ones that are within striking distance, but it is a full day, don't expect to nip out in the morning, do a couple of wreck dives and be back at the hotel for lunch time - it ain't like that!

Realistically you might get the Thistlegorm and one or two others in, and that with a few decent reef dives is still a top holiday.

Now thats a long day! O well does not sound like the usuall places we go were you can have two dives in an be back by 1-2pm. Think even a few long days like that will start to get a bit much.

You'll find most days are fairly long. Usually around 7.30 am pick up & back about 5.30 - 6pm.

I'll second that.
Pickup times seemed to vary depending upon who else was on your boat and where all the hotels were.

By the time you've got back, rinsed stuff and had a shower, you'll be heading for an early beer and a meal and that'll probably finish you off for the day...if you're diving again the next day!

PS: add insect repellent, bite/sting cream, and antiseptic to that shopping list. Clarkie picked up some nasty bites on her feet on the first night when we were sat outside - didn't heal all week with wet feet etc and you can still see the marks now.

We did Yolanda and Dunraven on day boats, and the longest day was Dunraven.

Hope you haven't booked an all-inclusive hotel, 'cos you won't be around much during the day to benefit! (although the hotels will pack a box for you)

Just got back from Sharm, dived in a 3mm full and on the last day I was getting seriously cold and was starting to dream about a 5mm suit.

The guides were in everything from shorts and t-shirt to 5mm semi-dry and I did see a Russian in a neoprene drysuit!

In addition to the other advice, if you have DIN regs, take your own allen key just in case and grab enough tanks for your days diving and take the inserts out at the start of the day's diving as not all cylinders have convertible valves (I got in the habit of setting up the first cylinder, then putting the tape on the neck of the next insertless cylinder to make it easy to pick out.

Isn't the actual Yolanda in 150m odd of water?

Shark and Yolanda is a cracking dive though.
