Getting mould and stuff off masks :O\

Ok, lovely little topic for everyone!

Whats the best way to clean my mask? I've taken it all apart (frame, skirt and lenses all separate now) and the frame and lenses were easy to clean, but whats the best way to deal with the silicone skirt? I can't just rub it like the other bits coz its soft and squidgy and sticky. Its not too bad or anything, just the bits where water gets trapped thats got a few little black bits (I assume mouldy), and the whole thing is starting to go a bit green and generally not-as-see-through-as-it-used-to-be.

Any tips and tricks (limited to using things that can be bought from Tesco) would be good.

David

spit in it, rub it round with your finger then leave for a few weeks.

It won't clean your mask but.....

You won't be worried about a few black spots then

Jif, or whatever the new brand name (Zif?) is very good for cleaning mask parts...It removes the black mould and the cloudiness that clear silicone develops over time. I soak the deconstructed mask in warm water then use the Jif on my fingers to work into all parts .... esp. where it is black/mouldy and cloudy. Soak in warm water then rinse again. Once reconstructed I spread and rinse a pea sized spot of toothpaste to give a more pleasant fragrance when I next dive. A quick check in the pool to ensure I have put it together properly and that it does not leak!! (Sometimes people don't click all the bits in properly and therefore don't get a great seal around the mask lenses).

A POTATO.

Cut a potato into a diamond shape and scrub it all over the mask, then let the mask soak in some weak solution of washing powder in warm water for a hour, then rinse in fresh water...... job done
