| Or how about using "homing salmon" - works on the same principle as spies carrying homing pigeons in the Great Wars? Salmon are well known for their abilities to find far-off places underwater. Divers could strap a note to their fins, and release a salmon from a specially constructed cage which would take a message back to the boat? Janos

| Or, divers could communicate with pheramones. A stench of sweat would mean that Woz is around, whereas fresh poo indicates that Digger is trapped in the wreck again. A specially modified mask would be required though, that allowed people's noses to come into contact with the water. Janos

| Shout very loudly into an airtight box. Then float it to the surface. The boat then picks the box up, opens the lid and receives the shouted message. I saw this on a Loony Tunes and it worked really well.

| OK going back to the original question and putting my Serious Hat on (the one shaped like a huge cowboy hat with the built in beer can holder, humerous clapping hands and made from foam rubber with built in "General Lee" air horn) you would need some sort of electrical impulsey thing that could be transmitted through the water and get picked up elsewhere then decoded. Radio waves are out as they don't go very far (shame though as a diver's GPS would be terribly useful) so we are reduced to using a VLF array (very low frequency) which has the disadvantage of needing a slighly cumbersome 2 mile long towed aerial. Alternatively we could use sound waves which, now I think about it, would be a great idea but might screw up the sounder on the boats above. However, I'm sure the YD Boffin department can come up with something. If it is stainless and shiny then I'll make it. If however it is dull black plastic then I'm not interested as of course no real diver would be. Oooooo- hang on- I saw something in the Plymouth aquarium on Sunday. Crittercam. That's the one. Find out what they are using and copy it. Then we can all have little cameras nailed to us. I might be talking complete crap about the radio thingy. Hmmmmm.

| I saw the same documentary. Was there a talking rabbit? Genetic engineering. Who needs it? I wouldn't want to eat that rabbit that's for sure! I also saw a similar programme where some animals used smoke signals to communicate. I know there is an underwater smoking device which allows you to have a tab underwater.... Janos
