Got one.
Unfortunatly it only works on the surface and requires me to get it out of its traveling case and turn it on.

However the day that I end up looking at my buddy and saying "Well it's been an hour, it's getting dark and still no sign of the boat. Perhaps we shouldn't have done that extra half an hour of bottom time. We did end up doing a lot of stops" I think we'll be quite glad to break it out.

Nope - that's silly. For caves you use an elastic dive line - when you stop swimming you get returned to your point of entry pronto.

I have sort of employed this technique when digging in a cave underwater - it beats backwards finning.

sonar responder

How about a device that responds to sonar on the upper surface of a diver.

So boat scans with Sonar and the device responds back with an ID and possibly data from further diver electronics - SPG /Integrated Computer.

The Sonar can be "focused" to provide resolution.

Alternatively use a commercially available comms system! and a piece of string as originally suggested!

If the intention is to save lives then perhaps it is simply better for divers to take responsibilty for themselves rather than develop yet more technology that could enable a diver to offload responsibility to the boat crew - "why didnt you tell me that I did not have enough gas left to do my deco?"

They track fish and various sea mammals with this method so it should work.
I am no expert so i might be wrong but seen various sites that offer radio tracking for fish, whales, dolphins etc etc. but it could just be that they work when they are surfaced I don't know as never used them

Whales and Dolphins are no problem as they need to surface to breathe and you can pick up the signal then. When I was diving from the Underpants Explorer in Australia, they were engaged in a project to track sharks. Once they'd tagged the Sharks they had to periodically return with some bait to attract the sharks within the range of the recording equipment. This was because the equipment had a very short range (of the order of a few metres).

Been following this thread, as I think the idea is a sound one. Unfortunately don't feel I'd be able to contribute much towards discussion.

But FF, you can't say this without some sort of clarification, can you???
