In defence of StephenT, Nigel didn't include a smiley with his comment. Since it is virtually impossible to gauge the tone of a post then the lack of a smiley would, usually, indicate a serious comment. In fact, Nigel then goes on to make a tongue-in-cheek comment in his next post and qualifies it with a smiley.

Please let's not start making unwarranted attacks on new members or we will be guilty of the crimes a number of people accuse other forums of.

Defoe ended up in the Pillory at Newgate for writing that 'All Dissenters should be goaled and their ministers hanged' not because the people in power liked Dissenters but because they had agreed with him then discovered that he was a Dissenter and sending them up.

(Note the smilie to excuse the racist remark - No. Hang on - I'm forgetting that under PC you can say what you like about White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants as they are immune from racism. You can insult us to death and we're not allowed to care.)

At least I feel I can quote reasonable historical references on YD and expect people to think. I did something similar on rec.scuba once and virtually got death threats. Again I was using being rude about what I am to illustrate a point and they just read it as an insult. (Defoe would describe what I am as a Dissenter - and since I have preached at a non-conformist 'Conventicle' maybe I should 'be hanged' too).

Smilies please on all posts agreeing with hanging me just so the mods can relax.
