Red face Necklace thingymajig - sorting out dangly bits

Ok, having read the article in the latest Diver mag regards dangly bits of kit and bad config, I admit to be a serious sinner of the higest order.

I THOUGHT I was doing the right thing, but admittedly, I need to spend some time this weekend, reorganising my kit.

The biggest offender were my gauges which i DID (gasp) have clipped across my body on d-rings to read them easily, though I now realise that in an emergency, it could very well be the thing that kills me. So, will change that and clip on corrosponding hip D-ring.

The reason for the post though, is the use of a necklace for holding the regs. Seen this loads of times on buddies and on diveboats, but until now, I hadn't seriously considered it or realised its potential.

Question is, what is the easiest or/amd best/safest way of making one? I normally dive with a 15L and 3L pony (attached to 15L) with primary reg and Pony reg on right clipped to right chest D-ring and octopus on left, clipped to left chest D-ring - configured for buddy use. The primary reg is currently in "dangly" mode and I would like it positioned for easy access.

So, recommendations and how to do it?

You can buy one from LDS or online or get hold of some bungee cord and make one yourself (normally the better option TBH).

Knackers sells bungee or they have a few types in stock at Stoney.

This config is ideally suited for primary donation which requires a long hose on your primary reg.

PM me if you need any help.

A loop of bungy with or without an overhand knot to make a secondary small loop then a plastic clip cable tied to your second stage like this:

OK so this is a Poseidon with some stocking across the mouthpiece to keep sh!t out. If you are donating from your primary with a long hose this doesn't need a necklace as it should be in your gob most of the time and easily passed over. When this happens you should be able to find your backup which should be hanging around your neck.

Bungy cord from your local DIY outlet. The plastic clip similar or I get mine for free off of the bags you get at conferences and meetings etc.

Whip off the zip tie that keeps your mouthpiece in place, fasten neck length piece of bungy in place with new zip tie. Maybe a small knot in each end of the bungy to stop it getting pulled out of place.

Primary donate on the long hose with alternate under your chin on the bungy.

Opinion on having three second stages is divided when using a pony rig, I ditched the third and just had a set up like a twinset.

Just my two Rand

Position of SPG - leave where they were but put an O ring in the "loop".

I use a store bought necklace (are you going to LIDS? ) and a Hog loop for the other.

What ever reg is round your neck it needs to be on a short bit of bungee so if you are unable to use your hands to put spare dv in mouth you are able to get hold of the dv mouthpiece without use of hands

For the primary, yeah that's a good idea. Secondary (on the necklace) is on a short hose.

Couple of options to think about:

1) Standard hogarthian setup - long hose primary, hog looped; backup on necklace round neck. Pony sideslung with reg bungeed to it.

A variant of this if you don't want to loop the long hose would be to bungee it to your cylinder.

2) Setup very much like what you have at the moment, but with your pony reg on the necklace.

When diving a single I started doing 2) then switched to 1). Have a play around and see what works for you.

Ooooh I never liked that idea... if someone really needs that reg then the mouthpiece will come off long before you break the bungee. Ok maybe you brief them not to take that one, but you can never predict what someone will do when they're OOA and on their last bit of breath! Seeing the mouthpiece sink to the sea bed is really not what you want in that situation.

Mine backup is around my neck too, but on a necklace similar to the octoguard things, only made of thin bungee - it is nicely held in place when you're not using it, the bungee actually rests against the zip tie of the mouthpiece, but if someone pulls at it the bungee will come away easily and cleanly, and there's no chance of pulling the mouthpiece off.
