I'm after loose lead shot myself, but I'l be damned if I am going to pay £3/kilo for it. Now where's my big tin of old .177 pellets?

I agree with Zepp about buying it loose and bagging it yourself. Or you could try buying a roll of roofers lead flashing. Much cheaper than commercial lead blocks (I paid £13.60 for 11k).

A bit fiddly to cut up with tin snips (que Mr Helen ) but I made it into 0.5k sheets and banded these together with velcro straps to go in my weight harness. We took sharp edges off with a file. I suppose you could cut it into smaller chunks for a pocket-style weight belt.

Advantages are that it is considerably less bulky than shot and the lead sheets can be moulded to fit round your body.

thats a great idea Helen, but I do need shot as its for a shot belt that you pour the loose balls into, not the sort that takes pouches.

Forgot to mention the way I worked out how big to cut the lengths:

I checked at the builders merchant what the weight and length of the roll of lead was, then divided the length of the lead by the weight and worked out how many centimetres would make up half kilo strips (obviously checking it would fit in my harness pouches). Then I cut a trial size and weighed it on my kitchen scales. Sorry if this sounds like teaching my granny to suck eggs, but it took me a while to work the correct size out!

The advantage to using the thin half-kilo strips is that you can really fine-tune your buoyancy (although I appreciate this is just as effective with loose shot).
