Which Left Handed Reel?

Following on from the left handed/right handed reel debate, I’d like to ask you lot for your advice.

I am left handed and have always blobbed off and used a reel in a right handed manner. I find SMB deployment the most task loaded part of the dive and frankly I’m pretty crap at it. I’m starting to think this is at least partly because I’m using the wrong hand to do everything.

I currently use a Custom Diver’s pocket reel and it is a thing of beauty but perhaps too small for use with thick gloves. On a recent dive at St Abbs my thumb slipped off the ratchet and although I recovered it quickly and with no hassle, the whole left handed issue is making me think of changing reels.

I just missed out on Sexydivebuddy’s 125m Custom Diver’s Wreck reel on ebay last night so I was thinking of getting a new 50m version. This can apparently be adapted for left handed use.

Knackers has an Agir-Brokk reel for £85, but this is a bit more than I wanted to pay. I’d prefer not to spend more than £50 for new.

I also have my eye on this on ebay. I believe it’s a Beaver reel and the seller tells me that on looking at it, the reel could easily be adapted for left hand use. I’ve bought off the seller before and have no problems with the stuff I’ve got in the past..

What do you lot reckon?

Thanks in advance of your help.

Wink

Why don't you give Kent Tooling a call ( 01227 700015 ) and ask if they could assemble a left handed reel. They appear to be modular so I'm sure they could assemble one for a left handed diver.

Either that or learn to operate a reel the right way round you FREEK!!!!

So what price range are Kent Tooling reels? From past discussions on here I got the impression they are a bit more than the £50 I want to pay, which is why I haven't looked at them.

looks sort of flimsie Helen
suppose it depends what you want it for?

I've always used McMahhone reels and never had problems ( they are definitely a right handed reel) but on the last trip we had at the Farnes they were seen to be flexing in strong currents
This has prompted me to get a Kent Tooling reel - which as was said on the other thread it can be used as a rachet or free spooling
and as was also said can be set up as left handed if specified.

I haven't had chance to use it yet but it certainly looks the part!

50m ratchet reel, left handed

Had a nice long conversation with John about my requirements and he's putting something together that meets my needs. A wee bit more than at first I had intended to spend but sounds like it will do just what I want.

In many cases a fool and his money are soon parted but I believe the advice I got from you guys and John has led me to a very wise choice. I'll let you know once received and duly tested.
