really it's whatever suits you - why not go for a dive to check out the new addition, and on the dive try it in a few different positions, see what suits you best

I personally have mine on the left but that's only because the harness break on my rig is on the right hand side
Some folk advocate the central position (rh shoulder ring to left hand hip ring) because the pony helps to balance out the single and stops you from being rotated in the water

definitely use the proper gauge, the pony ones aren't accurate and there's no point shelling out for stuff you already have

In that case the top d-ring (the metal one) looks fine. The d-ring hanging below the left pocket *may* work for the bottom clip (though it looks a bit too far forward, meaning the bottle may hang too low), but as Ed says above try out a few options and decide what works for you in the water.

absolutely

The issue to be aware of with that configuration is that it makes de-kitting more of a problem (think rescue situation for example)

When doing a stride entry of a boat is there any problems having the pony side slung, or do you have is passed to you once in the water?

I have a glide 2000 and the top and bottom metal d-rings are fine for this.

No - just use your left arm to hold the pony against you while you're covering the weight belt buckle with your left hand. IMHO it would be quite fiddly to clip it on in the water anyway!

Curiously, I've just switched from back mounted to side-slung on the left and am delighted with the results. Hardly notice it under water, no trim problems, easily accessible. Woo and indeed hoo..
