Spool Line Length

How much line do you have on your spool?

The Halcyon ones come with too much on them, so do you just measure 30 metres out or do you just take off enough to be able to attach the double ender??

Cheers

Dan

I have a 30m spool. I take off the double ender, clip it to me, and attach the SMB or the wreck via the loop.

Hi,

I was also woundering how much line is recomended for launching DSMB's from a spool.. I would only be diving 30m max but know that current can mean you need more line? Or do you only deploy from shallow depths?

(sorry to interupt your thread Dan but i thought it better not to start a new one!)
cheers. Nick

I think (and forgive me if I get the ratio wrong) but you should "budget" for 50% extra than your depth. So if you dive to 30m you should have 45m of line.

No SMB will ever go straight up they will always go at an angle depening on the current. So always have more line than necessary..

What happee if you launch yourSMB and the line gets snagged, you cut it and have to re launch? You need more line! (Yes I know n an ideal world you'll have a spare reel but sods law says you'll have left it at home/on the boat/lost it!!!)

I have a 30m and a 45m with 30m and 45m of line on respectively, however I can fit the double ended on each one.

What I would have thought would be that - as long as a) you can fit on the double ender and b) you know how much line you have - then just take off however much you need to take off. Alternatively get a larger (empty) spool and put your existing line on the new spool

As for shooting a DSMB, from 30m I'd want at least 45m of line - but as I'd rather have too much than not enough so I've got a 150m Kent Tooling reel

Undo your spool completely to check that it is tied on in the middle (I know, I know but find a good programme on television and get going).

When you wind it back up you can wind it over the middle section only for the first few layers. This means that the spool bulges in the middle leaving you able to fit on the full amount of line whilst keeping the holes round the edge free and easily accessible to snap your boltsnap in easily.

Good alternative, I'd not thought of that

Cheers Clare,

Just put a CD on and although it made me dizzy it works a treat. Time to strip down the other spool now as well
