Decanting / whipping

Good afternoon all,

I'm thinking of getting a decanting whip / hose so I can decant some gas into the twins from one of the 15's that I have. I don't want to do home blending I just want to give me some more gas for the second dive.

For instance, If I dive a 32% mix for dive one is it safe for me to whip clean air in on dive 2 and re-analyse? I don't see any reason why not...

Should the manifold be open or closed when decanting?

Also, is a 232 bar 15 sensible or should I get a 300 bar 12...

Cheers all,

Noel.

Absolutely no problem putting air on top and then reanalysing the gas. I would go for the 15 rather than the 12.

Also worth pointing out that if you want to maximise the amount of air that you can transfer over. Close the manifold on the twinset, then decant from the 15 into one side, then decant into the other side. Then open up the manifold. You will get more in like this rather than decanting into the twin set with the manifold open.

What he said, I have a Twin 232 bar 12's and a 15l for decanting. With 130 bar (ish) left over from dive one using the above method I can boost the twins back up to about 170/180 bar wich is great. You can also expect to still have the 170/180 bar left in the 15l cylinder so it is useable for a dive! Just re-analyse and your off.

Basic one will be fine, it doesn't even need to be O2 clean. But best to get one that is O2 clean if you ever plan to decant oxygen, or evne high O2 deco gasses.

From recollection, topping up my twin 10s from a 12 ltr pumped to 230 would usually give me just over 100 bar in the 10s. Apparently, you can actually get a better transfer by keeping the manifold closed and doing each cylinder individually - I never worried as there was shed loads of gas for the drift dive.

Having long ago worked out that I could do 2 dives on the first mix and not approach any O2 limits I never bothered analysing the second mix and just dived it as if on air.

It should be noted, that our drift dives rarely went below 15 mtrs and more care would have been taken for anything deeper.

I would def recommend you pay service to the O2 clean rules and keep your whip with proper 'end closers' on when not in use and make sure you use clean air in your single donor bottle.

Wot he said is very true. If you take the whip out onto the boat then if it gets any water in it, then you will blow this water into the twin set. Then you have rust problems in the making.

I use end closures and keep it it in a dry bag as well.
