I like ratchets myself.. but it's that Personal Preference thing again..
<font color='#0000FF'>Yes, the link between the boltsnap and the reel is metal. I noticed that but havn't thought any more about it.

Now I know what that thingi bit is called what is a ratchet? Is that the suicide clip? I'm getting confused now

A ratchet is the thingy that makes sure the reel only turns in one direction. Looks like your reel has a friction adjustment not a ratchet.

If you look at this article:

    http://www.divernet.com/equipment/0701reelsextra.htm

in the reels at the top, the yellow lever thing that sticks into the jagged bit of the spool is the ratchet mechanism.

Suicide clips are something else altogether...
that voodoo stuff don't do nuthin' for me

<font color='#8D38C9'>Reel bits made simple by Beanie or not as the case may well be :

1 boltsnap (also see dog clip, p clip): thingi to connect reel to diver (only when not in use)
2 ratcket: locking device for line - allows line to be reeled in but not out unless lever held in
3 suicide clip (carabina (sp) )??? ): clip from line to SMB may be replaced with a boltsnap or simple loop for reduced entanglement

    Clips explained (well sort of)

    o great now i'm confussed

Heheh... and if I go with the McMahon, should I get the big or the compact one. Likewise, if I get the Kent Tooling reel, is the extra bulk of the goodman handle worthwhile?

What are the pro's and con's of each?

    Cheers,

<font color='#0000FF'>The goodman handle is ideal for situations where 3 hands are necessary. Sits on the back of the hand allowing you to manipulate things as if you're not holding somthing aswell (if that makes sense)!

They are a bit bulky, but not too much.

Ratchets vs Friction, hmmm. Definately a personal/task decision.
Ratchets are very handy for locking the spool when you want to, just leggo the lever.
Friction requires a bit more interaction.

Ratchets more prone to breaking (shock when ratchet applied = x2 reels 4 me &nbsp; ).

Both good methods, borrow a mates/instructors and see what u think.

A Custom Divers 125 metre ratchet reel for me with an AP Valves Buddy pocket reel as a back up. &nbsp; The Custom Divers is a top quality bit of kit and I upgraded to this from the 50 metre version. &nbsp; The pocket reel is an absolute last resort to send a bag up on, its just too small and fiddly to wind in any decent length of line.

    Cheers

    Hi

I have used a McMahon (the big muver) for about 10 years, no problemo, great reel, big and simple (ahh bit like me)

I use it all the time as we as a club reel off from the shot as standard, so its a great distance line and very good for DSMB deployment if required (we usually come up the shot- its a shipping lanes kind of thing).

I have a small buddy thingy, the palm size one as back up with a DSMB. Its ok and i have used it as a distance line as well. But not a first choise by far. I also nearly had a rapid assent once when i got my thumb trapped between the reel handle and the line, scarey moment.

If you want a DSMB option try a delaydaid one, simple reel (like a McMahon) that you inflate the bag through the handle - very, very good. Top quality for mid-water deployment.

I used one of those Scubapro ones last year and i will be buying one for next season. I like it a lot.

Kent Toolings are good now he has ironed out the initial problems. He will be at LIDS and if you mention my name you may be able to get a deal, but his prices are damn good anyway. Check out his Pony brackets as well - very good.

I have to say that 'cos i'm his DO and he's giving me a free ticket into LIDS, and he knows i will not wear one of his T-Shirts to advertise for him

I've got the small McMahon and I love it.

It's small and fits in my drysuit pocket, the ratchet and winding mecanism are simple and easy to use and it's never jammed on me (famous last words).

I've seen lots of other more and less complicated reels, but I'd stioll have another like I've got now.
