Some profeshnyal torches use a hot melt glue gun to spadge everything up to stop cables from pulling out of heads.... me, I use Subconn connectors. Not cheap, but bloody good and rated to full ocean depth.

<font color='#000080'>Have just had a chat with the distributor of the PLB8-LD and apparently it's been specially designed for diving and is not a modified surface version, as were the older units which they were aware had some problems when used for diving as they were not specifically designed for the duty.

They guarantee them to 100m and have had them tested to 300m by the navy where they were still fine.  As for accidental activation, the new diving version has an O ring you have to physically remove before activation making accidental activation quote 'nigh on impossible'. There's a much better pic on Handbag.net

If you have a folding flag and can hang it off the top of that if you get lost at sea, the effective signal range is greatly enhanced compared with leaving it around your neck.

Hope this helps. should have some more info on pricing later today which I'll post on up.

<font color='#000080'>I have just placed an order for 3 units at 129 quid incl del, a saving of 60 quid over what the chandlers etc are selling them for. If you want me to add another to this order, drop me a PM and we can sort out payment and del. I don't think they will come further down than this unless, as you say, I order 10 of them.

I bought Marks old 'in can' unit, done another 60 or so dives with it, no problems. Never used in anger, happy to say.

Anyone know if these are worth using abroad BTW? Or was it pointless me having it with me in the red sea last week?

Dave.

For the record I like the peace of mind it gives me, especially on drift and/or bad weather dives in UK.

Hi Dave

Glad its still going OK M8

If you are abroard they are still worth having, just make sure the dive guides and the dive centre know you have it. I always get strange looks when I anounce it to the guides but they soon shut up when I remind them about the divers who were left behind last year and the year before. The Navy get involved when someone is lost at sea and if they know you have one they will monitor the frequancy. The chances of the average dive boat having an Eperb locator system are 1,000,000-1 against. They have a compus and thats about it.

PS: The one you got from me as the Mk2 box which aparently had few or no problems. The Mk1 Sea Marshal box had a diferent seel and that was the one that got the bad reputation.

Had a problem with my PLB8LD- after about 6 dives it started making weird beepy noises then as I was walking back to the car there was a sad little pop and it spurted oil eveywhere. Oh dear. Still, they replaced it very speedily and the replacement unit 20 odd dives later is fine. After seeing those guys bobbing around in the Red Sea for 12 hours makes you kind of glad you bought one.
