RIB first aid kit?

The current stuff from our RIB has expired, mouldy or just ancient so im looking at replacing our current first aid stuff.

Im looking for suggestions as to what to put in it or what others use.

The way i see it the most common injuries likely to be cuts, people having kit land on them or cold.

So any suggestions?

Space blanket

Traveleze (puke pills)
gauze pads and larger surgical pads
stretch bandages
superglue (fab for cuts)
adhesive tape
scissors
antiseptic cream (cetrimide based like savlon)
rubber gloves (for first aider)

This is pretty basic, but anything more more serious than minor cuts and bruises and you will be calling for help.

id be carful of having any pills in a first aid box . if somthing happens after you give them you could be in trouble . dont use super glue toxins can be absorbed in the blood stream . there is a cut glue available from first aid store's with out the toxins

cpr mask
burn gel
pleanty of bandages
pads
steri wipes
plenty of gloves
steri strips (plastic stiches)
space blanket

St. Johns (St John Ambulance Supplies - for your first aid, health and safety, training products and publications) do a custom sports kit which includes loads of really useful stuff things like big automatic-cooling-bandages (and also for some reason a large tub of vaseline.)

It may be worth getting the full first aid kit that we the charter boats have to carry it has everything that you may require they are about £80.00. I carry 2 of these on my boat one for general cuts and the other is sealed incense of a major injury.

You can get these kits from sea weather on 01322 275513

I quite like the look of the "Crewmedic First Aid Kits"

They work on the principle of how far are you away from help ie 15, 30, 60, 180 mins.

The Combined Diving Associations, in their document entitled "GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFE OPERATION OF MEMBER CLUB DIVE BOATS "

suggests the following for First Aid kits:

Quote:
FIRST AID KITS
Introduction
A first aid kit is the prime source of essential medical
items that will provide the first-aider with the basics to
attend the casualty prior to hospitalisation. The contents
of a kit depend on the distance of operation from
medical resources ashore and the risks that the boat
occupants are likely to be subjected to.

The following kits are the minimum recommended for
inshore and offshore diving respectively.

Small boat kit (Inshore use – up to 3 miles):

2 x Large sterile dressings
1 x Large pack of assorted adhesive dressings
2 x Large triangular bandages
1 x Rescue blanket or large polythene bag
6 x Safety pins
Disposable gloves

Items should be individually wrapped and sealed in
plastic bags.

Whole kit should be housed in a waterproof container.

Offshore kit (in excess of 3 miles):

1 x First aid instructions
6 x Each small, medium and large standard dressings
1 x Large pack of assorted adhesive dressings
4 x Large triangular bandages
10 x Assorted safety pins
3 x 50mm roller bandages
1 x 50mm crepe bandage
1 x Roll 25mm zinc oxide plaster
1 x Set of scissors
1 x Set of tweezers
1 x Pack of sterile cotton wool
2 x Pairs of disposable gloves
1 x Rescue blanket or large polythene bag
Disposable gloves
Pocket mask, or suitable barrier, for use when giving AV

Items should be individually wrapped and sealed in
plastic bags.

Whole kit should be housed in a sturdy weatherproof
container.

Additional items may be necessary if the diving is to
take place in more remote locations where medical
resources are not readily available and the expedition is
of a longer duration.
As HVSAC is a BSAC branch, then these guidelines represent best-practise.
(btw say hello to anyone at HVSAC who might remember me ; if your current mouldy kits are housed in Black BDH containers with contents list in the lid then I made them up in about 2000 )

HTH

David.

The kits have long gone (new mouldy ones) but the BDH containers are still somewhere. None really watertight now though and the contents of one defies medical science.

(oh and i lost one a few weeks ago when it floated out of the boat after hitting a wave)
