reels - how do you mark off yours?

My new, shiny (& pink line) Kent Tooling friction reel arrived this morning .

(great service from John as only ordered at 11am yesterday)

So my question now is how do you mark off yours?

My current thinking is every 3m and every meter from 0-10.

Any advice (and reasoning) greatfully recieved

Cheers
Chris

Marking off for what purpose? Bagging up, or penetration?

I have a single knot at 3m, 2 knots (spaced about 2cm) at 6m, 3 knots at 9m. Then I have 2 close (~5mm apart) knots at 20m, 3 close knots at 30m etc up to about 50m.

I use knots so that I can feel them with gloves on, and I know the sequence, so have a good idea of depth/distance when totally blind. The knots don't effect deployment in the slightest.

My spools are marked at 9 metres so I know how much line to lay for practicing CESAs (just dont start). Other than that what's the point?

Talking

Possibly apart from KT reels and how they are made, wouldn't knots in your line potentially provide a snagging hazard as they go through the guide slot on the reel.

I've never seen any point in doing this.

As a ballpark figure, around 5 turns of my 45m spool is approximately 1m, from bagging off at 21m all the way to the surface. I supplement this approximation with a device I wear on my wrist that will give me a more accurate figure

Likewise, 5 turns of my reel is approximately 2m.

Clearly these figures will become less accurate as the length unfurled increases but you can add a fudge factor.

Marking for survey is one thing but I am not sure the KT reel would be your first choice for that.

Knots on the line for deco are ok if you can conceive a solo ascent with zero vis or no gauge.

Zero vis in the ocean is fairly inconceivable I think other than a lost mask .... so take a spare mask.

A broken guage is another possibility .... so take a spare gauge.

I would not want to complicate/compromise the line feed on every deployment for the advantage it might give on a fairly impossible situation.

HTH
Mal
