It's a fish spear, with a big loop of rubber tube tied to the blunt end, to form a ring (like catapult rubber), the spear itself is probably 4-6 ft long. You push your hand through the loop, so it's hanging in the webbing between thumb and forefinger of your right hand (or left if you're a southpaw) and then feed the shaft of the spear through the fingers of the same hand the same hand until it's almost at the spear tip, you then grasp the top end of the shaft very firmly so the rubber tube loop is under lots of tension, point it at the target and release it.

The spear shoots forward for it's full length and whacks the fish.

They are a doddle to use, very effective, although fairly short range (couple of metres) & very safe because of the limited travel.

Here's one.

Regulations regarding the removal of lobsters do vary from area to area, but frankly I'd be surprised if any of the Sea Fisheries Committees allowed it.

Even dis-regarding the legality of it, personally I think leaving them is the right thing to do, otherwise where is the next generation going to come from?

cheers,
Paul

I think you'll find that this is another of the Dog's wind-ups; yep, I'm definitely starting to sense the Black Dog rearing it's big dumb newfy head again.

It is (was) Friday after all.

I think you should find one, take it home, keep it in an aquarium and call it "N--ger".

Actually no

i caught 3 lobby's off lundy the other day and 1 was in berry that got boiled i have seen a spear type system in Weymouth that i liked but no one makes it around here

Richard if you knew me you would know every dive i come back from i have the food bag with me but due to the numbers they fight in the bag and i often end up loosing a large claw i just need to make the way i get them more efficient

the idea of the spear gun/rod came about because of the size of the Bass on the Salsette a couple of them, and that would have paid for my dive

as it is diver caught lobby's,well they go for £9 per Lb and there are loads of pubs that will pay that for them on the way home

It's legal for us to take seafood here too and there are plenty of hunter-gatherers - crays, abalone etc, although I limit myself to scallops - but there's strict seasons on everything (except abs) and taking crayfish in berry and selling your catch are massive no-nos (although some do it, I know).

I wasn't doubting that you frequently catch seafood, more the berry thing TBH, personally, I wouldn't do it.

It's a bit rough whacking fish on a popular dive site too - to me, the wildlife is part of the attraction of a good site like that.

What is it about the lobster being diver caught that attracts a premium price?

The Salsette is regularly fished by clubs so me taking a few isn't going to upset the system, because a boat load of fishermen will catch 20/30 bass a trip, as for the lobby's well due to these guys fishing they catch the congers and large fish and take them home etc so the lobby's and the crab's grow large enough for the pubs to pay a premium price for them

I was on the quay the other day and a boat load of divers were selling there fish for £4 per kilo and nice fish they were, but they were a BSAC club and i don't think had any kind of licence but no one cares down here.

there was guy from the red lion pub told a diver (not from here) to put the scallops back that he caught off clovelly (In no take zone ) The diver threw them back in off the wall of the quay and left, after a few hours the same guy came out and as the tide was out picked up all the scallops and left with them in a box

Graham,

It would be against the Devon Sea fisheries by-laws, number 27.

DSFC

Adrian

PS Graham - I looked up the shelling scallops business. I could find no specific ref to a law, but there has been at least 1 prosecution for landing shelled scallop meat. As far as I can work out, it is not about making you a commercial scalloper, but proving the scallop was of a legal size. Undersized should be put back in the water immediately.

Well if that's the way everyone carries on, it's no surprise that the UK inland fisheries are all fckued. It's no good whingeing about the Spanish nicking everything.
