Nope. Bad idea. YOu want a friction reel for laying line, can I suggest one of KT's finest reels, stack on a load of line and just ask John to fit one of his lovely scooter handles to the side (come in a range of sizes I believe) - this is the ultimate line laying reel. And no silly stainless screw into an aluminium body to worry about, unless Halcyon have finally fixed that problem.
Keep your ratchet reel for SMB deployment, that is the job it is designed to do. And it does it well. You can use it in a pinch for laying line if you need to, but much better for the SMB job.
If you use a friction reel for SMB use, you will, eventually, drop it. And it won't be locked off. Bye bye reel.
You then have a friction reel for laying line, and a ratchet reel for SMB use. And either can if needed cover the job of the other, but you then have a backup for either as well.
You carry two reels, you've got all the jobs covered.
If you really really need to cover your arse in another direction, stick a decent length spool in your pocket as well. Job done.
Digs.
Yep, just been reading a load over other posts from years back. Seems this is a silly idea.![]()
