Actually that's not true. As someone else has already stated, the only reason you'd be forced to upgrade a pre-3.0 VR3 to new electronics is to get VPM-BE simply because the older models lack the memory capacity to handle the newer algorythm. For everything else - trimix OC and CC, big graphics, gas analyzer etc - it's a simple pin code upgrade which you can do over the phone.

If anyone is interested, I do have a VR3 which I'd be happy to sell on. It's been gathering dust for quite some time now (funnily enough) so it's probably about time I moved it on. It's a mono 2.1CXR model with a 7-pin connector and is open circuit trimix activated. It's in extremely good condition, has seen little use and comes with all the usual packaging, battery compartment tool and manuals. As they say - make me a *reasonable* offer! For your reference, current price through Barry at Divertec is £652 inc VAT for a mono OC trimix VR3.

The Vytec is a good computer for nitrox use, however if at a later date you are thinking about Tri Mix or CCR the VR3 has its advantages. As I personally use a run time slate for my more "technical" type dives, I find the Vytec in gauge mode works very well as it counts in minutes and seconds makiing keeping to the run time easier. When I dive with buddies who are using VR3s I find they can normally get out of the water a few minutes before me. When I dive with club mates who are oc and single mixes I find that I am hanging around at 5 metres for an internity while there computers clear. So you need to think what diving are you going to be doing in the futore and how are your buddies calculating there deco.

Weekend just gone I ran tables cut from V-planner alongside a Vytec DS, set to the standard settings rather than the deep stop option. The contrast was quite interesting. For a 35 mtr dive with bottom time of 45 mins and 32%, the table gave me a run time of 62 mins with a switch to 80% at 9 mtrs. I had stops at 12, 9, 6 & 3 mtrs. In reality the bottom time was actually around 37 mins and the Vytec penalised me so hard for making the stops at 12, 9 & 6 mtrs (it wanted me to do most of the stops at 3m) that it took 61 mins for the Vytec to clear.
Will definitely set the Vytec to DS mode next time and see how it compares.

You'll find the DS won't like your V-Planner stops - you'll need to do either the deep stops the DS wants (which are basically Pyle stops based on the current deco ceiling), or do the stops from the tables you've cut. If you do the latter (i.e. ignore what the DS wants) then the DS will revert back to 'normal' mode, and you'll have the same situation as you describe for last weekend.

Have you considered the Smart Teck (sp?) from Uwatec? I got to see one last Sunday after a dive, the guy had a transmitter on his back tank and one on his deco tank, and was easily able to switch between the two. Around £600 for the computer and another £200 for the extra transmitter I'm told.

That's interesting, when I was in plymouth a few months back, I used my VR3 and Vytec - I followed the deep stops on the VR3, but I wasn't penalised as such on the Vytec... (at least it didn't clock up anymore deco while doing the deeper stops...!)
