I finally have dates for another history week in 2012, this time aboard the MV Invincible.
Dates are 7th-12th October
The idea is for a full weeks diving in Scapa as per a normal charter, but with loads more information added to really bring Scapa alive both above and below the water;
Accomodation is onboard in twin berth cabins, we dive from the Sunday through to Friday with 2 dives per day.
Prior to each dive there is a comprehensive brief using 3d software, ships plans, photo keys, artisits impressions and my own knowledge to make sure you can find the really good bits of the wrecks.
At the end of each day we get together around the monitor for about 30 mins for an informal presentation on the background to Scapa's history looking into:
- From Sailing Ship to Battleship: an arms race that precipitated the First World War
- Engagements during the Great War culminating in the Battle of Jutland
- The internment of the High Seas Fleet, armistice negotiations and scuttling itself.
- The Defense and Role of Scapa Flow 1914-45
- The Interwar Years: the start of salvage and a new dawn of war.
The diving focus's on the main seven German wrecks with us trying to get a couple of dives on most of them, we also aim to get a blockship in.
During surface intervals, for those who enjoy a short walk, there are escorted walks to areas of significance; all being well on one evening we head off to the Churchill Barriers to see the defences and Italian Chapel on the Eastern side of the Flow [we normally aim to base ourselves in Burray that night].
Cost is £575 per person and includes, 6 days diving and 7 nights accomodation, breakfast and lunch on the diving days, all the dive briefs, escorted walks, presentations, air fills. Cylinder hire; twins, ccr bottles and stages [a limited number of 12 and 15 litre cylinders are available free of charge] and lime can be arranged but will incur and additional cost.
