The Thermocline wear is equivalent to around 2.5mm of neoprean and is designed for under wet suits or on it's own, the xerotherm wear is for under dry suits and has little protection when wet. James

| I am reading this thread in Ecuador having just spent 10 days on Daphne, Deep Blues sister boat. The water temps on our trip varied from 14 to 23 C. Darwin and Wolf ranginging from 19 to 23 C. I wore a 5mm longy with an internal 3mm vest and a 5mm shorty on top for the central islands and the longy in Wolf and Darwin. I wear a 5mm suit in the Maldives just to give you an idea of my cold threshold. My partner wore a 5mm semi dry with a 3mm vest under it and she normally wears 3mm in the Maldives. A hood and at least one pair of gloves are a must as I nearly wore through mine. Unless you are really good with a dry suit in currents and are prepared to risk ripping it I would forget that idea. You will spend long periods hanging on in strong currents and the dives are 50 minutes long. A small torch is fine as there is very little if any night diving. It is not a tropical destination so less shorts and T shirts more trousers and fleeces are required, especially after you have spent all day chilling underwater. The diving in Darwin and Wolf is world class and although we only saw a couple of Whale Sharks we did see 2 Orcas scaring the living daylights out of the hundreds of Hammer heads. Back to the UK Sunday for some serious laundry sessions Last edited by Monkey Matt : 16-09-07 at 07:02 PM. |

| Thanks Matt At 14 degrees it sounds cold, were you ok with the suits you wore or did you get chilly in the currents? James

| I would echo previous comments. Most of the diving is at Darwin & Wolf where I was OK with a 5 mm suit, but in the central islands I wore a Fourth Element vest under my suit and was OK for up to an hour (I think I also wore a hood on those dives). Others wore 3mm suits and added a 3mm shorty in the central islands, but I think they were hardier than me! Note that the stronger currents are at Darwin & Wolf where it's warmer. You will need gloves on all dives, more to protect against barnacles than cold. Expect the gloves to be shredded by the time you return. It really is fantastic - hope you have a fabulous time.
