Diving Sound of Mull?

Hi all, looking at running a sound of mull trip for our club but was looking for recommendations of dive day boats operating the sound with suitable accomodation?

We are looking at digs within staggering distance of a decent pub or two - so does Oban fit the bill?

... a penny for your thoughts, thanks.
Richie N.

HI Richie,

There are loads of B&B in Oban. If you want to get the best out of your trip you may consider staying half way up the sound at Lochaline. That would give you quicker access/shorter boat trips to the north or South. The local skipper is Allan at Lochaline Boat charters and the dive centre has accommodation for up to 34 people. check lochaline Dive centre (google it).

YD groups use the place every year (including next weekend) and we always have a fab trip.

The down side with Lochaline is it has only two bars (Hotel and Social Club). So if you are looking for a boozy trip you would be better off in Oban. There are lodges at Puffin Dive Centre near Oban. Most of the skippers in the area will pick you up at Lochaline, Oban or Tobermory.

The "Silver Swift" is based at Tobermory and will pick folk up from Oban at the start of a trip, stay in B&B in Tobe then drop you bakc to Oban at the end.

You have lots of options and I am sure you will enjoy yourself.

Personally I would always vote for Lochaline.

Try a liveaboard, Gaelic Rose... £70 per person per day, incl diving, air, food and bed...

Moors up at different ports along the Sound of Mul... an annual trip for me...

Our club dives the sound of mull every year (ish) in October. We use the Hjalmar Bjorge, which in my opionion is one of the best liveaboards I have been on.

This year we did 5 days on her. Steaming out of Oban along the sound of Mull and up to Kyle of Lochalsh for a couple of dives, then back.

It is like a floating hotel and the food is fabulous. Fresh Baked bread, home made soup etc.

Their website is ... http://www.northernlight-uk.com/

Our trips to Mull are normally filled up before we get home from the last one. ie a year early.

There is a report on our club website if you have time for a peek. One for 2005 and one for 2004

Except a hob that doesn't need two hours to warm up!

But that's the only negative comment I could make. I'd definitely go for Lochaline. Alan is a top class skipper and really knows his stuff. He's never given us a duff dive. The accomodation at the dive centre is more than adequate and excellent value. In fact, once you've got there, a weekend diving from Lochaline is about the cheapest I've found anywhere.

It's an annual 'must do' on my dive planning list. Contact details are all on the first post of the thread for the trip next week.
