Trips/sub-bench etiquette - help

OK, a quick one for the masses... a not so hypothetical question!

I've organised a trip and its filled up fairly quickly. Early on, someone posts to say that they're interested in coming along but doesn't put there name on the list of spaces or on the subs-bench (the spaces are all gone at this point).

Now people come along after this and say that they're interested as well, but they do put their names on the subs list.

Finally as the trip draws nearer spaces come available - should those spaces be allocated purely on the subs bench listings, or should the show of interest count?

Obviously I want to be fair to everyone but in this case its a difficult one...

Simon

I would consider the subs bench first. It is really a continuation of the main list. If they have not put themselves on the main list, they are not serious about the trip.

It is nice and easy for all to follow and add themselves to, although some appear to copy older lists rather than the most recent.

Subs Bench, then if they decide they aren't interested moves down the list.

I would take the names from the subs bench first.

If I saw that in a thread, I would be inclined to add said interested party to the subs bench just to avoid any problems. Of course, it's not difficult for someone to put their own name on a list, so there is almost a case of "you know the protocol, you didn't follow it, you missed out". If I want to get on a trip, I make sure my name is down on the list so there's no confusion. Sometimes this means putting my name down before I'm 100% certain I can make the trip.

In answer to your question though, I'd be thinking that an expression of interest is just that, and that putting a name on the subs' bench is confirmation of that interest.

An age old one in our club.
Unfortunatly only money talks .

Ideally, you would collect deposits and when people pay their deposit, they know that they are obliged to pay you the full amount.

Strictly they should not be able to sell their places on, but should go through tyou so that you are happy that the replacement is up to the level of the group, especially if it a a diver without a buddy expecting you to pair him/her up.

I'd say that without deposits, that putting one's name on the list or the sub's bench was a little more definate than a verbal show of interest, unles you knoew the person well enough to vouch for them and add their name yourself e.g. if I was organising a trip, I would book Kirstie on, if she could not go and none of the subs was available as a late notice, then I pay for (or am responsible for paying for) her.

Sounds easy, but is complicated by mate, long-standing club memebers etc etc.

FWIW, I'd offer the place to the people who signed onto the sub's bench.

Well thanks for all the comments anyway.

Given that the issue is sort of resolved in that the people next on the subs list want 2 spaces and there's only 1 available *AND* they're happy that it goes to the person who put in a show of interest but forgot to amend the list, I think we have a solution...

Still, worthwhile checking.

Thanks,
Simon

I think next time I do a trip if someone does this I'll send them a pm to clarify if they want to definitely go/get them to put themselves on the subs list. This is the way it should have been done originally, but ....... ain't hindsight wonderful

Your trip. Your call.

I used to do this a lot and I felt it right to omit people I didn't think would work and include latecomers at whim.

These days I'm just starting to Marshall club stuff and my brief is to match the divers and the site. If I think you need looking after and I haven't got somebody to look after you it ain't gonna happen.

I can be such a bitch....
