Some of you may already know that I go to Thailand every year. Usually in February but sometimes at other times of the year. The next time I am thinking of going will be February 2008 for 4 weeks. While there I will do over 30 dives on day trips and a liveaboard.
I am not organising a trip!
But if anyone is thinking about coming along I can keep you all informed of what I am doing/planning.
The usual trip involves :-
- Direct flight to Bangkok £650 on EVA
- Bangkok to Phuket £40
- Taxi to accomodation £10
- Acccomodation in air con room overlooking Kata Beach £16 a night
- Motorbike (moped) rental £2 a day (optional)
- Similan, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Surin, Richalieu Rock liveaboard (6 nights) £350
- Phi Phi overnighter £100
- Racha Yai day trip £50
- Racha Noi day trip £50
- Hin Daeng / Hin Muang £75
- Taxi to airport £10
- Flight to Bangkok £40
Ok so why these choices.
EVA airline, economy deluxe flight, 25kg baggage allowance, 5" extra legroom, direct flight.
Kata Beach is less crowded and quieter then places like Patong and very close to the pier at Chalong where most boats leave from. It is only 10k from Patong, which is why we rent mopeds, it's easier and cheaper than taxis (tuk tuks).
Accomodation, has a few stairs with a view over the sea. It's high up so no tsunami concerns in your sleep. It's aircon, satellite TV, H&C shower and has a fridge. It's also next to Phuket Scuba club where I book my trips and a restaurant and a bar. I prefer Kata Mama restaurant on the beach, a meal there is about £1.
Dive trips, Similan Liveaboard, 19 dives over 5 days excellent vis and it is a world class dive site. Phi Phi overnighter, 7 dives, and a nights stay on Phi Phi island.
Racha Yai (2 dives) is beautifull, Racha Noi (4 dives) get visited by Mantas regularily.
Hin Daeng/Hin Muang, you have to dive it to know why.
There is plenty of time for more diving or just sightseeing if you prefer. There are shows and discos to visit at night or bars galore.
I usually take my basic single cylinder setup, cylinders and weights are supplied on all trips.
As I said I am not orgainising a trip, this is just what I normally do, if anyone is interested in joining me or would like to know more, let me know.
Flights are from Heathrow, I drive up and park the car at the Purple Parking site near Heathrow for about £70 or for an extra £16 they'll deliver my car to the terminal on my return, at least the engine will be warm
Any questions, or anyone thinking of coming please post rather than PM, someone else may have the same question.
There's usually anything from 2 to 5 of us going normally so I thought I'd throw it open.
I usually book my EVA flight during the summer, then connecting flights a couple of months later when I book the accomodation.
Spouses welcome, whatever, you don't even have to be a diver. If you want to do a course we can organise it with Phuket Scuba club (PADI courses only).
