I've been told this a few times, and with other skippers as well.

I have to be honest, there has to be an easier way to book dives with more certainty. I just want be able to book some dives, and dive - and not worry about whether anyone wants to team up with me - one of the reasons why I find Fathome and blues very good to work with, as they take the uncertainty out of the this equation. Problem is, I prefer not to dive a rib with a twinset - and I want a little more variety in my dives!

This is not a DIR matter. You could easily have five pairs on a bot who for one reason or another would prefer not to have an unknwn quantity put upon them on a dive.

If any skipper/dive centre will not permit solo diving, then is it fair to accept individual bookings thus placing the burden of accomodating the diver on to other paying teams.

Interested in your view.

Anyway - should you not be jetting off somewhere exotic?
The honeymoon starts Wednesday

OK I take your point, but the skipper is not responsible for what the divers actually do and its a commercial charter not a club rib with a diving officer.......

The skipper can and will assist in finding a buddy for people who have not come with a buddy but, must not, and will not tell people who to dive with. (lets not even open the liability thread).

We dont stop single people from booking but if they cant find someone to dive with and they dont feel quailfied through certification or experience to go solo then they will no doubt decide not to get off the boat. The emphasis is that its their decision.

We do not stop people from going solo, we might, advise against it, but at the end of the day we do not tell people how to dive - just like we dont tell them who to dive with. (Its all in the booking terms and conditions)
Hope this explains my position?

ps I agree that If any skipper/dive centre will not permit solo diving then they should not accept solo bookings unless they are going to start enforcing who dives with who........ but then we get back to people like you who would object to that so we come full circle to our approach which seems to be the middle ground and works as long as people understand the conditions at the time of booking.

The simple answer then is to join a club.... we have local club www.mdd-uk.com they run weekly club dives on our boats at reduced prices, they always sort your buddy pairs out and after a few weeks yo0u will have loads of other members quite happy to join you on commercial trips as your buddy.

Still a few spaces left on the dives we're doing as part of this gig May Day '07 Weekend - Portland/Weymouth Gig

We're not booking the whole boat so there may be other non-YD people on the boat as well but I imagine we should be able to sort buddy pairs/threes out amongst the YD people. If you want to join us for any or all of the dives, book via divedorset and then post on the other thread

edit: correction - no spaces on the Black Hawk but as far as I can see some space on the others - incl Aeolian Sky on Monday 7 may
