Ohhh, Dave.  The old &quot;it was on an empty stomach m'lud&quot; defence.  Used that one before myself... no-one ever believed me either  To be fair, it is the drinking equivalent of &quot;the dog ate my homework Miss&quot;

Anyway... back to the Lakes... was sent this link by a friend as my knowledge of that area is very limited compared to the Norvern Monkeys on YD.... thought it might be of interest to others.... Scuba Diving in the Lake District

If you click on 'Go Scuba' it gives you a map and a navigation bar to select which site you are interested in.   Not the most intuitive site in the world, but found it quite interesting anyway.

OK goodly YD'ers, here's the skinny.

After this weekend's splendidly successful TDI Advanced Nitrox course in the Lakes and at the Cape, HelenM, Jules and Phil Ennis cooked up a cunning plan to run a 'I'm under water, it's hit the fan, what skills do I need to extract myself from the brown stuff?' weekend.

Projected Rescue &amp; Safety Skills to be Covered:

* Complete regulator failiure and how to address this
* Controlled Buoyant Lift - of unconscious diver from depth
* Rescue Scenarios - e.g. search drills
* O2 Provider

Course Make-up:

* A day in the training suite at Dales Divers combined with
* A full day in the water learning and drilling the skills.

MINIMUM DIVER CERT FOR THIS GIG: Either PADI Advanced Diver or BSAC Sports Diver or other equivalent.

Envisaged a maximum of 12 divers for the course - this allows for a ratio of 1:4 instructor to candidate.

Course (Day One) to be held at Dales Divers training facility at:

Dales Divers
Bramhaw
Sedbergh
Cumbria
LA10 5HP

Day Two (in water) to be held at Wastwater in the Lake District (if you've never experienced 30 metre viz in the UK, now's your opportunity!! I jest you not.)

Cost is £45.00 per diver which covers both days instruction, air and resources from Dales Divers (instructors, CPR Dummies, O2 etc.) NB: This is a Dales Divers 'Brush up Your Skills' weekend and is NOT a certifiable course - it is open to ALL diver training agencies and schools. It's a good idea for those who are maybe just getting back into diving now the season is upon us and for those attending some of the dive trips currently on the YD Dive Trip calendar.

If it is found that this 'course' becomes over-suscribed, then we shall be happy to run another one very shortly after this one, so please don't worry if you can't get on this one, as we envisage that they will become regular events.

** NB: We aim to get there Friday night, so we might partake of some comestibles and a sherry or two - the social side of the weekend begins here!

Right then, let's be having your names:

YD 'Skills-n-Drills' Weekend - Sat 08th &amp; Sun 09th May 2004

* 01 Helen 'Speak Up!' Mutter
* 02 Julia 'Tiggie Winkles' Clark
* 03 Bren Tierney
* 04 Rick 'Frogman' Huggins
* 05 Lesser-spotted Davey &quot;Would you please stop turning my f*ckin air off!?&quot; Willo
* 06 AirAssisted (Ian)
* 07 Dave (Psmudge)
* 08 Mark 'Mind the Steps, please Sir' Davies
* 09 Mike
* 10

Troop Gig Total = 09.....filling up and NEARLY FULL!! KEEP EYES-ON FOR ANY SPACES BECOMING AVAILABLE!!!

YD 'Liggers-in-Residence' - Sunday only, and doing their own thing

* Gavin Yates
* Ben 'Driftwood' Durrant
*

Yes I've got that page bookmarked. Its very good giving nice plans of individual lakes with obsticles to watch out for.

Hope you have a great time, I'm sure you will. I look forward to your report on the weekend. I'll be sunning myself in Menorca &nbsp;

I had homework, but no dog - it never stopped me using such a time-honoured gem &nbsp;.... Equally, when I have had an evening of being an embarrassing lightweight I'll usually try and pull the old 'haven't had anything to eat'... and sometimes it's true

Menorca eh? &nbsp;Mmmmmmmm sunshine.... And isn't there a gin factory too? &nbsp;Or have I got the wrong island? &nbsp;Enjoy!

<font color='#000080'>Is there a Gin Factory! There is about three I think. We visited one a few years ago and they have about 11 different types. From Orange to Chocolate and cream to mint. The Gin in Menorca is fantastic and as my folks go there twice every year I always have one or two bottles of Menorcan Gin in the cuboard at home.

Menorca is also like a swisse cheese. Its full of caves and caverns. Lovely safe swim throughs to explore whist diving. I love diving there and can't wait to return now.

I couldn't remember if I had the right island... my parents took my sister and I around one of those places when I was about ten (so she would have been six or seven). &nbsp;They were contentedly browsing, unaware of the fact that Sue and I were hoovering up all those free taste glasses they have.... we ended up paralytic - it wasn't pretty later .

Diving sounds nice there - will look forward to a report when you get back. &nbsp;Although obviously you'd rather be in the Lakes with us

<font color='#000080'>I laughed out loud when I read the word Hoovering!! I can just see you two craftily downing thimble shots of flavoured gin with the odd glance over your shoulder to make sure the parents aren't looking.  I know just where you meen too if you were at the factory shop in the Port of Mahon. I'm sure your parents had fun dealing with the aftermath back at the villa too.

Hey if you've never dived Wastwater I'm sure you'll be amazed at the extent of the limit of vision in there. The bottom is very silty (a couple of feet thick) so best avoid going within a metre of it. But providing no one stirs it up, you'll get 30m on a good day. On the Nitrox course in Feb with Digger, we dived over the silt slope down to 15m, then over the edge of the underwater cliff. Its a Granite cliff going down to the bottom. On the way back as we approached the top of the cliff I followed someones bubbles up with my eyes as they rose, and was gobsmacked when I was able to follow them to the surface 18m above me. I could clearly see the slight ripples on the surface from 18m and all of a sudden the lake grew from the extent of my vision, to the cliff a few metres to my right - to the surface 18m above. Thats when the true feeling of flying took over for me. Amazing vis, only spoiled with a lack of plant life down there. I'm sure you'll love it.

May I ask if anyone will be wearing semi dry suits on this DnS course? sounds like it gets a bit chilly lower than 30mtrs!!

Also is anyone taking an underwater camera? If so I'd like a few pics, not that I'm vain or anything!!
