Absolutely no worries Ron.

SUCS is a wreck respect club and any divers on our boats pay proper
respect, it is a war grave and will be treated as such. We are fully aware
of the tragedy of the U1195 (not forgetting the Cuba), made even more
so considering the war was already lost. The really sad thing is the ages
with nearly all in there very early 20's.

This trip is part of Projek Das Boote, mapping the current condition of the
East IOW subs and adding to an archive being created at Solent University.
Once collated, all information is also being forwarded to the NAS.

In December 2004, Rudolph Wieser (Matr.Ob.Gfr), who is now 83yrs old, gave me the following account of the attack for 'Silent Warriors' and as far as I know, Rudi is the last survivor of U 1195:

“U1195 was dived when we were hit by HMS Watchman’s hedgehogs and the crew was catapulted out of their bunks; the boat went down and hit the bottom. The depth gauge showed 38 meters. Heller and I tried to close a hole in the front torpedo room, but to no avail and the water rushed in. I gathered all Tauchretter escape sets and left the bow torpedo chamber. I tried to close the bulkhead behind me, but could no more. Lt Cdr Cordes gave order to leave the front of the ship. The radio operators destroyed all secret equipment and documents. The crew now huddled together in the control room. The LI tried to surface the boat with air pressure, but it didn’t work. The CO now ordered the crew to prepare to escape via the control room hatch. A second group gathered around Lt Schick in the galley and a third in the electrical engine room under PO Derkorn.
All men except me had escape sets. I had given mine to the Medical orderly, Clement. In the meantime the conning tower hatch was opened and the outboard valves opened to flood the chamber. The chamber was plunged into darkness and in order to find our way to the hatch, a cable was attached. I sat on the chart table and waited for the hatch to open, dived and went back to the chart table, when all of a sudden I felt sick from the chlorine gas that was escaping and said to my comrades ‘I’m getting out’. Fireman Heller heard that and also swam to the hatch and swam to the surface. When we arrived at the surface we found 9 comrades from the central and among them was the chief engineer. We were eventually rescued and very unfairly treated by the crew of the French ship, L‘Escaramouche and later transferred to HMS Hoste (Lt. P.J.H. Hoare). From the galley, 5 men surfaced and from the aft hatch only 2 survived. On the British ships we were treated very well and got back to Germany 1947”

Kindly translated by Juergen Meyer-Brenkhof (Fregattenkapitän D)

Cheers Ron

The hedgehog damage is quite considerable, with a gaping hole just
forward of the control room. Bearing in mind that this boat has deterioated
further over the last 60 years, such damage couldnt have been anything
other than terminal.

She now lies with a list to starboard of just shy of 45 degrees, sat on a
sand and shingle plateau of 30m.
