Sunday 24th June - U1195 (30m) + Luis (17m)

NOW FULL

Got 0 Spaces on Trojan based at Haslar Marina Gosport and we
will be diving the WW2 submarine the U1195 + The 5000 ton Luis as a
second.

Really good tide on this one, with loads of slack and a civilised meet at
Haslar at 9.15am for a 10.15 depart.

After sinking the massive liner the Cuba in April 1945, the U1195 was sunk
by hedgehog depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Watchman.

Max depth is 30m and cost for the day which will include that second
is £40.

Gonna be good

is this the sub with a big hole in it where the conning tower is off to one side, German war grave? Sadly I'm diving Saturday so I cant make it, but if its the sub I think, it was a cracking dive, one of my favourites.

Yep that's the one.

Big hole is where the hedgehog mine hit. Stern is worth a look too, with
stern tube, prop and stern planes.

Tis a very good dive and it's Sunday, do two days :-)

Tempted, very very tempted.

I'll mail my buddy and see if he's free. I might just get a 2 day pass as its Fathers day this week and I'm not diving. Of course at least one day (if not both) will be blown out anyway

I'll get back to you, I have a feeling negotiations with the pass isuuing authority could be 'tricky'

U1195

Have dived her several times, nice dive U1195 was also responsable for the sinking of the James Egan Layne on the 21st March 1945.

U1195
Type...V11C/41
Commissioned... 4th November 1943
Date of loss... 6th April 1945
Casualties...31
Survivors...2 officers,5 senior ratings,11 junior rates
Cause of loss...Hedgehog,British designed weapon fitted in British and US escorts. The weapon fired ahead of the ship and thus asdic contact was not lost as in a depth charge attack when the attacking ship had to pass over the target before dropping the charges.Hedgehog bombs where fitted with contact fuses,an explosion meant a hit, inturn results were easy to assess, unlike depth charges that were equiped with pressure fuses that detonated at a predetermined depth.

Didnt know that.

Thought they were just multiple mortar type mini-versions of a depth
charge. Mind you when you see the damage amidships, it must have been
a direct hit. Viz isnt too bad and getting better, so I'll take some pics.
