Hi all, not long now

I've been on the phone with Porthkerris and they've asked me to sort out a few things, so PM's will be on their way to everyone in a mo, but just in case...

1. If anyone's interested but not put their name down yet, can you let me know ASAP - Porthkerris have had several people looking for buddy spaces for that weekend and obviously the centre would like to know if we're not filling the boat.

2. They've asked if people could try and keep dive times to a max of approx. 1 hour - given we've got two trips on the boat each day, this seems reasonable to me. They have however said if people specifically want to do longer, then let me know and if they want to go on the 2nd boat each day they'll try and accommodate them.

3. Finally, they've asked me to request that people not take GPS on board - apparently there are a couple of new charters starting up in the area and they've spotted people sneaking on board and taking the marks.

4. If anyone's wanting camping and hasn't booked it yet - especially if you want a space down on the beach, it might be an idea to give Porthkerris a call on 01326 280620

Other than that, if people could let me have their full names along with buddy pairs if you know yet and if they have any dietary preferences/allergies etc so we can make sure lunches are appropriate.

Finally, I said at the beginning that I'd give preference on the Sunday to those having the furthest distance to travel being on the first boat, so if you have a preference please let me know and how far you've got to travel

Cheers,
Simon

OK, so they want to charge total full whack for both trips (ie to their benefit) and THEN limit dive time so they can squeeze these in? I'll take the second trip each day please.....which suits fine as we obviously don't have far to go. Our dive times will depend on the site & the conditions. but may just exceed an hour, by past experience in the area. I do think it is a bit off, that, Simon, but as the only reason for us to be on the trip is to dive with YD-ers we will go with majority thoughts. I have to say I wouldn't have booked under those terms up front though.

As for GPS, that's quite amusing. The only new charter in the area I know of is Okeanos and he has a full set of marks in the GPS he got with the boat If there are other new charters it would be interesting to know who!

Ah Lou
I guess thats where your question on another post came from. I cant be positive but I thought last year the dives were only about an hour long anyway. Must admit I cant recall how long the surface interval was as I inadvertently deleted my logs from the pc.

The same query arouse at our club with regards to a NE coast trip and concerns were that 8.30-13.00 = 2 dives and SI was not sufficient but is cheaper then costs of south coast boat hire and boat probably not going out far to sea .

It actually isn't where it came from - but it is a little ironic the situation has arisen here! I didn't plan that, although I think the views expressed there are pertinent.

The dive time depends on the site. We would do about an hour on something like the Volnay, maybe a touch less on the Coroni Rivers, but could easily do more on a single 12 on something like Vase or Raglan, or even the Rock Island Bridge, all due to depth and what there is to see. Spent 20 mins just watching a parade of sea hares on the white surround around the Rock island Bridge a few weeks ago, and still had the rest of the dive to do

Lou,
firstly about the GPS - I can only pass on what Porthkerris have asked.

However with regards to the scheduling and everything else I'm going to have to defend Porthkerris here. Firstly let me point out that I've got no interests in Porthkerris other than someone who has dived there for 15 years and always been well looked after, and as an organiser of trips down there for at least 12 years.

I need to point out that when I spoke to him when I was originally putting the trip together, he didn't want to run two trips and asked me to reconsider. I pointed out that we had plenty of people who had been down previously and wanted to come again and so he agreed to run them as I asked. Obviously he's going to have twice the income of a single trip, but can I also point out that equally obviously he's going to have slightly more than a single trips worth of costs - fuel, wear & tear, Mike's own time etc aren't magically reduced to the cost of a single trip.

Secondly as you've pointed out on your recent thread, there's a tendency for some skippers to squeeze dive times and surface intervals so that they can get back to shore quickly. I've just checked my logs for last year - on both days, 1st dive was about 8:30 with an hour in water, 2 hours SI and then another hours dive. Given approx 30 minutes to site (Manacles are probably only 15 mins, but City of Ghent is I'm certain more than 30 mins), how is the skipper supposed to fit in the dives and give a surface interval that you'd be happy with and still fit in two runs with those times?

Mike has confirmed that he's planning to run roughly the same schedule i.e. first run RTG @ 8:30ish, 2nd @ approx 1:45ish - he's also said that if people want more than an hour, he's happy to try and fit that in, but to be fair to the 2nd run he'd ask that those people go on the 2nd run. I personally see that as trying to keep everyone happy.

Mike is aware that he didn't stipulate the 1hr run times originally as am I, and if you're not happy with that I'll personally refund your money and see if I can sort something with Mike - hopefully that's necessary but again I want to make sure that everyone is happy with the trip. Again let me point out, I hope that won't be necessary Lou.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the subject - feel free to add your comments and/or PM if you want. Also if anyone else has any concerns, please let me know.

Simon

You've made exactly my point - you can't really fit two, 2-dive days into 1 day in most cases, so it will be a squeeze on times. Now if Mike didn't want to do that in the first place, then that is a plus for him and I retract my slightly cynical tone from the earlier post.

As I said, my only reasons for being on the trip is to dive with you guys and the other YD-ers, and hence we are paying for that priviledge and will go with the majority view. However, as I also said, the second trip is fine and dandy with us - gives us a lie-in on each day and no worries about the drive home

The GPS comment was tongue-in-cheek. It really is amusing to imagine folk sneaking onto a charter boat to nick marks! Idle or what!

Looking forward to seeing you, Simon. No hard feelings on this, I appreciate the effort you go to to arrange these.

Now - is anyone interested in Mark's offer to run a RIB trip on the Friday, if he can still do it?

Lou
