| Decent wage Ok, what do you lot consider to be a decent living wage? i.e someone who has a job that could be considered to be part of a career - not a job to fill in the time, or dead end dross.

| In all seriousness, I think a few more options are required. Regional variations aside. I would consider a decent wage to be one that allows me to pay the mortgage, do a bit more diving, plus enough for a rainy day. Sadly not there yet Adrian

| What planet are you from???? I'm doing "dead end dross" as you put it and if I earned as little as your top poll I'd have to give up diving as well as feeding the kids. Get real. Allan |

| Erm, my montly pay packet is three figures......after tax. So i come from planet "piss poor pay" I have done dead end dross - waitress, receptionist, and now have a job that maybe, one day, will lead to bigger things. If i earned as much as the top end of the poll i would be a very happy bunny. What i mean, is a starting wage - what you would expect for putting in 37 - 40 hours a week in your first proper job.

| Minimum wage is £4.50 i think. I lived off that for 2 years. I dived throughout. When i got my previous job i was on £4.75 an hour!

Duly taken in to consideration and poll amended to suit a broader band of earnings. A 'Living' or 'Decent Wage' means different things to different people - assuming we're not all aiming to exist just beyond the 'breadline'?

| Dont smoke, and dont drink at home. Only when i go out (ahem), which isnt that often either. I cant beleive that some of you think that a first job warrants such a large wage. If i had held out for those kind of figures i would be on the dole for evermore. Im a graduate, and yet have had to accept a low wage.

| This is where your confusion lies Helen: compare and contrast: Quote:
when set against this level of expectation: Quote:
In the first you speak of 'decent/living wages', 'careers', 'not part time' etc. and in the second you refer to 'first jobs'? The two conditions are not compatible or even relative.
