1 We all know the words spoken outside, but inside the LEM it would have been "Shutdown", referring to the descent engine which should have been switched just off before they landed

2 Michael Collins

3 Gene Cernan, Commander Apollo 17 mission

hmm, perhaps I phrased the question wrong. I have been told that the first word broadcast from the moon was 'Houston' as in "Houston, this is tranquility base, the eagle has landed". Having said that, the broadcast mikes were open right through descent so if shutdown was uttered post landing and pre the 'eagle' message it would have been the first word.

I must confess to having an unfair advatage, I've got a well read copy of "A man on the moon - the voyages of the Apollo astronauts" by Andrew Chakin, this book was part of the reason Tom Hanks made his TV series ("From the earth to the moon") about the "space-race"

I have that as well (so well read the front has fallen off!) but I didn't have it to hand to check the veracity of my belief (I was told that Houston is famous for only 2 things - 1 being this diusputed fact-ette and the other that it is the most air conditioned place on earth).

I bought my copy in the travel guide section of Stanfords ... not a huge queue in the travel agents to book it yet (although I do believe Lunn Poly will take £20 off you as a deposit against possible future space holidays).

Have you also got the Tom Wolfe book 'The Right Stuff'? Far better than the movie based on it, full of heroic derring doo although I understand it's been discredited in some circles as being a little too much 'drama' as opposed to 'documentary'.

isn't the interweb wonderful

did a google search for the first words on the moon and if the internet is to be believed (people wouldn't lie on the web would they?), we are both wrong:
Quote:
Language Weird Facts
... The first word spoken on the moon was "okay". The first words spoken by Alexander
Bell over the telephone were: "Watson, please come here. I want you". ...

No not got that one, the movie was a bit disappointing so I'm sure the book would be miles better.

I'm sure the person who wrote that website believes his facts to be correct but I'd rather trust a book than a personal website anyday, I'd accept Houston as a "first word" too as it was broadcast rather than just spoken.

moon photos

Speaking as an fully trained ex combat photographer it is very easy to take a photo of a person with the light behind the subject and have the front of the subject nicely exposed. Its called, strangely enough, backlit photography.
