I always where ever possible buy Organic/Free range meat. I am an animal/fish lover but still eat them! Given half a chance a lot of them would eat me! - including Smudge & Miss Kitty my cats if I'm late with their food!

No, No and thrice No... I, personally, couldn't even contemplate the idea. I am concerned though over the treatment of livestock for commercial farming which is one reason, not the main reason but it is one of them, for me switching to a organic diet. At least I know the meat was from a happy animal and it tastes so much nicer... and the veggies taste fantastic...

Believe it or not 'non-veggie', coward that's quite happy for others to slaughter [1] the meat I'm going to eat. Respect those that are though. Definition of an Argentinian veggie, eats salad with their Steak. As told to me one night in an Argentinian steak house in Holland.

Matt

[1] Slaughter in the true sense i.e. at an abatoir or similar. I hope that prevents reds incoming.

Unhappy pretend bacon

As a confirmed veggie (blame it on the missus! ) the two things I missed most were Pepperoni on a pizza and bacon.

I now get my bacon in the form of a pretend quorn replicant which hits about 70% of the mark but I still have yet to find a veggie pepperoni replacement. You can get great veggie sausages but they are not able to compete. Unless anybody knows different (Dr Stevil?).

Sorry dude, never had a pre-veggie taste for pepperoni so not a flavour I would know or miss.

As for carnivores missing (or not!) the taste of meat when presented with a veggie meal, I've seen that in practice lately.
Jules's was concerned that her son Matt - who's 15 and as carnivorous as a boy can get - might need an alternative meaty meal on standby the night I dished up my BBQ flavour veggie enchiladas. All Matt said was "Is there any more?"
Jules's was more than a bit surprised. I rest my case :P
Sorry Bethi, I'll make a less chilli-fied one for you next time.

Ere!

Why did it say "no, sorry"? I'm not sorry. Cows and sheep are just vermin, the place is infested with them, I was out in the countryside the other day and there were whole fields of grass heaving with them!!! They need to be controlled somehow and eating them seems as good a way as any. I remember the potato famine, don't want that happening to our grass crops do we?

Mmmm, got a nice big pot of bunny stew waiting for me at home tonight

Cheers,

Stuart

Happily omniverous

The Ramada hotel in Inverness has veggie sausages that taste worryingly porkier than the meat ones, the best veggie sausage I've ever had.

If only they could do a veggie black pudding!

I must admit I wouldn't miss meat from my diet as I don't really eat that much of it, but sausages definitely. I've never yet had a veggie equivalent that could really rival a decent sausage, whether its a traditional Brit stylie or a foreign johnny sausage -- chorizo beats pepperoni any day for me. In a lot of sausages it is the fat rather than the meat that gives the texture and flavour. You can use all the same spices and a vegetable protein but there is nothing that can really be substituted for the animal fat portion.
