Crack Knob or Self contained regs

As we all know some regs come with a crack knob while others do not.

Some manufacturers offer the option of both while others just one or the other. So my poll question is:

Do you prefer a self contained reg or a crack knob and what do you base this choice on?

Is a crack knob some sort of prison slang?

If it's the +/- switch on some regs (like Apeks) then I quite like that as I use a scooter a lot and it stops the regs freeflowing. If it's the adjustment knob then I don't see the point. The one on my TX50, you set it, you left it, you never touched it again for months. Waste of money, if it's properly set up then you don't need it.

Cheers,

Stuart

I believe the crack knob is the knob that adjusts the 'cracking pressure' i.e. the amount of vacuum required to start the reg breathing.

It's a feature of, amongst many others, the Apeks TX50 & Scubapro S600; whereas the TX40 & S550 are the equivalent regs without the feature.

I've found it useful in the past to stop a reg from bubbling.

Ditto, when I was on OC I bought Apeks ATX40 as (as far as I was concerned) all the Apeks range were basically the ATX40 plus some addition apart from the 1st stages, which I didn't really care about.

If I needed to adjust the cracking preasure I would do it on the surface with a cheapy Alan Key.

Crack Knob = The adjustment knob on the side of some second stages.

I'd have one. You can twiddle if if scootering, in a current or simply dropping down a shot. Plus when you hear it hissing a bit on the boat you can adjust it easily without finding a toolbox.

Buy the Apeks 40 series then stick one of those £6.95 knobs on it to turn it into a 50.

It really depends if you know what you are doing.

A slight hiss and yes you can de-tune it, but then again it takes about
2 minutes (if that) with a spanner and allan key (TX40). If it's on the dive
and bugging you, then just unscrew the cover a part turn for the same
effect.

There is no way that i'd have them on all the club TX40's. The thought of
students buggering around with them !!!! jeeze no
