Disinfecting agent - Betadine

Hello,

I was told that I can disinfect my breather using a diluated Betadine solution, anyone here use it? If yes how much do you dilute it with water ? What other agents you use apart from buddy clean.

Err I wouldn’t,

It’s a rather sticky stuff when not diluted and will leave a brown skin behind.

This is the stuff we use in hospitals to clean skin prior to operations, you may have seen them do it on TV, lashings of the stuff all sticky and brown. (it contains loads of Iodine)

Will get your rig disinfected okay but may leave unwanted residue behind and it smell is not that nice either.

Probably better off useing hibi-scrub solution.

Betadine is good for scrapes and grazes, but not your RB, Pierre, my friend.

Partially off topic, I personally am not too anal about disinfecting my RB.

I have just checked and I bought a 500 ml of Buddy Clean over 2 years ago and it is still half full.

I only disinfect the thing once every two months, or, after an expedition, or, if someone else has breathed it.

Cheers

Dave Cooper

Other small thing to bear in mind (although obviously not for you Pierre ) is that Betadine is teraterogenic so any pregnant ladies shouldn't really get too close (now I'm not getting dragged in the diving whilst pregnant debate) so if you're trying for a Pierrelet probably not the best thing to have around the house (although I doubt your missus gets too close to the dive kit )

Thanks Dave as usual,

I tought that I should disinfact the breathing hose every dive and lungs now and then. I had used it in the breathing hose only as I didn't want to risk the lungs, actually the taste is not the best! As I don't like to risk I better order a bottle of buddy clean.

Well his exhale counterlung might be a big yucky but there is 8 inches of nasty, caustic sofnolime between that and the way back into him. I would put money on 'lime being quite high on the disinfectant stakes. I seem to remember its appetite for hydrocarbons way exceeds its taste for CO2.

Good to hear. I'm bored of Buddy Clean having been breathing the damn stuff on and off for three dives now. Not strong but a bitch to track down...

Betadine!!! Keep it away from me - I'm allergic to it!!! Can be a bit of a problem at times as we use it by the bucketful in theatre!!!
Use loads of sodalime too! Unfortunately its the 2.5 - 5 size...
