Breathing Oxygen from BOC/Air Products

I’m just setting myself up with an O2 supply from the Derby BOC. They have quoted £35.02 for the gas, £5-90 per month rental and £8-95 service charge for pickup or £27 for delivery. These prices all seem reasonable, the size of cylinder is PW (11 m3 of gas at 1 bar, supplied at 230 bar) From the dimensions it seems like what I would call a J. They are sending me some details of a "decanting licence", which I will need before this all happens.

Questions to the more experienced members are:

1. Do these prices seem about right.
2. What counts as a decanting licence.

I've just set up an account with Air products. I chose them because Linde service over the phone was not very good and because BOC said max 137bar, even when asked if they could do 200+.

In terms of a decanting license - can't help, but I did start my conversation by saying I was a qualified Gas blender, so that might have covered that.

What's the service charge for?

Air Products charges for a J of DIVING GRADE O2 pumped to 200 bar

Gas £36.58
Rental 20p per day (£6 per month approx)
Delivery £27.75 - or collection £10.12

The service charge is the same as your £10.12 for collection - so pretty similar. The 230 bar supply sounds better than Air products - particularly as I wont have a booster.

Dave,

I get my O2 from Air Products... they have an agent around the corner...

It runs at £25 for a "J" fill (47 litre) with 20p a day cylinder rental. (Then maybe the handling fees (£10) too depending on if it's delivered or you pick it up) - it is indeed 200bar

Contact Carol Williams at Air products, who is exceptionally helpful.

You'll need to set up an account with Direct Debit etc.

In terms of a decanting/storage license... nothing needed

Cheers Bud

Rather oddly they appear to have a somewhat random pricing mechanism... I know people what get charged a lot more... If you deal with Carol and mention these prices you shouldn't go far wrong.

Mark,

Thanks for that - do you have a direct number for Carol?

If you think it's inappropriate to post please PM it.

Talked to Air Products, they say they had a price increase on 1/12/04, so the gas now costs £36-58. Rental, delivery and collection charges seem the same. (Exactly Juz's experience)

So in balance the only significant difference seems to be that BOC provide @230bar and need you to have a "decanting licence", and Air Products provide @ 200bar.

I will post back to the thread when I've sorted out the definition of the licence.

Not that I don't believe you! I just rechecked, and asked the AP staff to double check as I had been told that 230 Bar was available and they insist it's 200 Bar. I wonder if some depots have higher capacity supplies?

we get between 200-230, evry time and we get it for 25 squid a bottle, thats about the going rate, you could always ahggle with them to get it down a bit more, if you say you ove spoke to linde, and air products, then they might deal
