Too BOV or Not too Bov

TBH, having looked at the responses and now having done a bit of research, i don't think i would BOVer witha BOV.

Firstly £600 or thereabouts for one which will probably have to be serviced as often as any side slung bail out reg.

Frankly having only once had to bail out at 70M for real i had my poseidon cyclon in my gob, sling on and breathing happily within about 2-3 seconds.

With regards to CO2 i don't think it would make much difference to weather i have a BOV or not, frankly having seen the HSE video of the SKY TV diver with a CO2 hit, he didn't know which way up or down he was.

Now if a BOV was around £200-£250 i might think of it.

I have to say I agree. I don't really see where the money goes, I don't see £3-400 worth of materials and time in them over the cost of a plain DSV.

Its your call, depends what I'm doing but I usually do 2*70-80min dives which doesn't leave very much life in it.

If I am doing anything 40m+ its a fresh fill, If I only do say an hour on it I will use it another day after capping it with a narked@90 lid. Anything over, its more the fact I can't be arsed changing the scrubber midday or at the dive site did that at the ndac this weekend hanged the head off the estates boot and the unit hung beneath the exhaust (I was tired) result a load of shit in the o2 filter(I did have some caps from narked at 90 but mate was messing with them on friday and i couldn't find them) result I removed the filter and the fitting off the head and cleaned it, but lost the filter so I used one for a dil inflator it just fit. I learnt a lesson that day, dont let people mess with your stuff.

I've told the story before so I apologise to those that have already heard it. I had a CO2 hit. I'm not quite sure why now but once the breathing reflex has gone into overdrive doing anything to stop yourself breathing becomes impossible. This is brain-stem stuff. You might as well try to stop your knee jerk reflex.

So there I am puffing like a steam train going up hill, I know exactly what is the problem but I can not stop gasping to change the loop in my mouth that is killing me for the reg I have in my hand and a flush didn't seem to do anything.

Thankfully I had an ADV and started exhaling through my nose so I get new DIL into the loop as I inhaled. It took more than a few breaths but I finally managed to swap the thing in my mouth and then shut off the loop. As I cleared my mask, I had nearly blown it off my face, I discovered my son had hold of my harness. I was about to be CBLed. Rather sheepishly I signalled <up><ok> and we did.

On the strength of that I bought the BOV. All I need to do now is twist the plate and I'm on DIL. You can't fight the design features that are built into your head to keep you alive so accommodate them. My reg was in my hand but it might as well have been a million miles away and that is reported again and again by CO2 hit survivors.

I will deco penetration solo dive alpinest but the BOV is a must have even in the pool.

Sorry but totally agree with Nigel having been there & doner it with a CO2 hit ,fortunately I already had a Bov & managed to switch very easilly BUT it does creep up on you & by the time you realise as Nigel says you are chuffing like a train .
Mine was as AM says down to user error I had not checked the mushroom valves on assembly & one had been dislodged , funnily enough it was the crapiest BOV made ... the infamous Paragon that I was using !

Spoke to AP & they do not have a release date yet but if you are a registered owner then you will get an email first about prices & ordering etc

I don't think Ash will want to tell me Colin, would you care to divulge for the readers pleasure.

Of course it would only be for information so any poor unsuspecting diver doesn't do the same thing by chance.
