All great info..thanks

cheapest option i looked at was running it from a petrol/diesel engine...but easier to use electricity...I was thinking along the lines of a smaller single phase motor and beefing up the supply to my shed....Windy - how do you downsize it to a 60Cfm? is it easy or ???? any more info appreciated.

I think in the interim Ill go for a Petrol Motor you can get a decent one for about £50, any thoughts on HP? ... If the compressor works ok Ill look at electric motors or phase convertors.
any info on Motors and sizes, and Pulleys appreciated.

i am sure my neighbours will love the noise

Here's a novel thought......

Buy yourself a 3 phase portable generator. I don't know what KVA you need but a quick Google shows some can be had for £700. When you do sort out a permanent solution you still have a useful genny for those camping/diving trips.

3 Phase petrol and diesel generators range

highjack.....Hi Windy! Our compressor is still up and running since I fitted the bits you got us. Thanks.

There is no easy way around this, "yea cana break the laws of physics" well electrics anyway.
If the compressor is fitted with a 3 phase then switching it to a single phase motor will probabley not work ....or at least the motor will not last very long. It will also be physically larger than a 3 phase motor.
We have a Bauer compressor and when tried to get the compressor with a single phase motor we were told by Bauer they did not supply one as there were problems of them going pop. Its only the smaller compressors that Bauer will supply with single phase motors.
So we fitted a rotary phase converter run for the last five years not a problem.

PM me if you would like more info

Chris

I think there may be a clue in the running speed.

Windy knows what he's talking about on the subject of compressors.

Completely off topic.....well sort of.

I must be lucky as I have 3 phase in my house...we all do out here.

At the PDU it is tapped off to single phase 240v but 3 phase is available......can I borrow your compressor?

Ha Ha I am sure we could come to some arrangement involving warm water Diving....just getting it to you is the issue...cant see excess baggeage taking kindly to it...

As to the Physics I had worked it out that i couldnt expect miracles....so it is down to a petrol engined motor until I can source an old style single phase motor. Dont want to spend money on phase convertors if it isnt going to be viable.

Funny my wife had a brainwave she said why not connect one of your Old Motorbikes to it....what a great idea clutch, electric start, ...well on some of them...connect sprocket to thye compressor and away you go, up through the gears...12l filled in 2 mins!!!!... .sorry gettin carried away...nice thought though

Sorry Chris
Would disagree with you about the motor lasting , before we bought our club compressor it had a hard life :- It is an 8cfm Compair reavell 3 phase which the previous owner converted to single phase . He ran the compressor from 9am to 4pm with an hour of for dinner 5days a week for approx 5 years on the single phase motor . He used it for filling beer gas cylinders which was his buisness , had a bank of 12 taps for filling them . The motor is still going strong & enjoying a more "retired" enviroment
