Knowledge Needed

Hi all, just wondering when you were changing from O/C to your rebreather -

How did you prepare for the course?
Did you read anything that gave you a better understanding ?
Has anyone got any DONT'S before doing course ?

I know my MOD1 isnt till march but it doesnt hurt to go prepared and ready!

Dont be surprised if you hate the rebreather after the first few dives, it does get better. I found the first day ok learning skills but then my diving went backwards, at the end of the week I still was not convinced rebreather diving was for me, now I hate slumming it on OC. A mate lent me a book about rebreathers which was very informative I will get title and post it. Welcome to the silent side.

Pete,

Sounds like you took the plunge and went for the Sentinel!?. Will it look good with the Elvis hood though?

Anyway, prep for MOD1? - get the manuals and read them - then read them again......

People will go on about buoyancy....IMHO some people get it, some don't -it was not a problem for me....so you will not know till you put the thing on and go for a spin. In fact I find buoyancy easier to control on CCR.

The thing I found hard to get used to was all the crap on my chest again with OTS counter lungs - of course this will not be a problem for you on the Sentinel.....

Good luck with MOD1 and I might see you on a boat again some day.

ATB

Roy

Agree with Roy either you get it or you don't .... I didn't & even 2 years on find the bouyancy an issue on ascents .
I did my pool sessions & thought " whats so hard ?" then did my OW dives at Stoney ,on the first dive I had a panic attack & all I wanted to do was get out & go home . Fortunately my instructor took me back to the 6m shelf & we sat there talking for about 20minutes untill I calmed down ,then of we went on an hour long dive with no problems .
I made the decision then that as soon as I got home my OC kit was sold . No temptation at the first problem to jump back to OC & use the yellow box as a door stop !
Roy ,I also hated the OTS lungs & changed my ybod ones to rear mounted & its lovely, nice clear chest again

Ditto to what the others have said.

Most manufacturers have the unit's manual available for download, I read a few, including my own before my mod1.

Good luck.

Pete,

I'm just starting to sell my OC kit - thought I'd keep it "just in case", but I would not dive OC anymore and it is wasted sitting in the corner collecting dust.

So Scapa 2008 - you should get some nice BT's this time!. Must admit I was tempted again, but I am doing Norway 2008.

Once your up and running, maybe Malin Head 2009?

Sounds good that as it is just 50 miles up the road from me !! Malin Head -That's the main reason for going CCR so many u-boats wrecks etc, and 2009 will give me plenty of time to become a proficient beginner.

No problems with the set up ,it was designed by Dave Thompson & even stood on your head finning like hell there is no noticable increase in WOB . I had a kit made by John Routley (narked at 90) which put the manual add buttons back on the front ( I have mine round the waist strap ) I would never go back to OTS ,I used my Vision standard for 2 dives & then changed & have been diving it for the last 18months with rear mounted .If you pop over to RBW & send a pm to "dave t " there it talk of him selkling some .
