Ship Lime or Buy Lime

I'm off to Dahab in April and last year I paid 15euro a kilo in the red sea which is steep.

Now what is the current thinking:

Am I likely to get stopped trying to get 15kgs of lime out in my suitcase???

Or am I best shipping it?

Or paying for it when out there? I dont mind paying a bit over the odds but 15 euro is ridiculous.

My unit and clothes come in around 42kgs over two bags.

They have to pay 100% import tariff + shipping costs (typically on a pallet basis) so you'd expect to pay a lot more...

I struggle with excess luggage without the lime/tanks, taking my own only makes it worse. What is theexcess luggage rate per kilo? (if you can get it) Do the sums is it cost effective, the charter operators are charging quite a lot per kilo of excess.

I've always stumped up & paid for it, in fact I end up using Daeger DiveSorb because that gets shipped in by the container load & was more readily available.

Actually just back from Red Sea, I saved myself a load of hassle/cost & went OC.... 8kg under my weight allowance

Last time I went to the Red Sea I took a tub of 20kg (sealed). No problems at all.

If you have the weight allowance, then go for it.

I dont mind paying I just dont want to be ripped off. So from what you've said it looks like they are just covering costs.

I'll ring the airline this week and see what they say, the bonus is my misses doesn't dive(yet) so I get some of her allowance but then for the privalege I get to pay for the holiday.

You could try Tekstreme (Red Sea Technical Diving - Emperor Divers TEKSTREME) in Sharm. They charge 11 euro a kilo and travel between Dahab and Sharm regularly. It may not be practical but probably worth a try.

we went out to sharm and took all our kit plus two of the smaller tubs of lime we were well over weight but no one batted an eye lid.

I can't remember who we flew with at that time, but you need to be careful if you are flying with first choice cause they charged us for every bit over our allowance last year
