| Regulators and Cylinders: Discuss Cold Water Diving: What's 'The Daddy' of all Regulators? in the Dive Kit and Equipment forums: For cold water diving, which regs are generally regarded as being "The Daddy"? I currently use Dacor Vipertecs, are these ... |

| If you have money to burn then probably the Apeks ATX 200. Then again the TX40 is just as nice a breathe if set up properly and is way cheaper. Other people swear by Poseidons- I have a Jetstream and it's luvverly but some prefer Cyklons. Strange breathe but fine once you get used to it. Also Sherwoods are meant to be a very underrated reg.

| I've used Dacors in very cold conditions and they've been fine. For extreme cold water regs the first stage should be environmentally sealed and the second stage should have lots of metal in and around it which will act as a heat sink taking wamrth (beleive it or not) from cold water and raising the temperature of the air in the reg preventing free flowing. The Aqualung Cousteau Glacia is a great example of this or the Scubapro S600 Classic. I personally prefer Poseidons but thats just me... HTH Noel.

My standard TX50 2nd stage / DS4 1st stage setup caused me no problems in 5degC last year. Adrian

| Xtreams I have tested by purging for 3 minutes in 5 deg C water and they stopped as soon as I took me finger off the button. I felt happy there is no way these regs would freese over. They've been great as long as you service them. Fin |

| Mares Abyss. Coldwater rated, have NEVER had a freeflow, or any probs. |

| My Aqualung LX supremes have been out in 5deg this year and were fine. I swapped to these from Apex ATX40's which were also fine during the winter. |

| Hell fire Fin, I know the purge flow on the Xstream is a *cough* bit high as well - How much did you have left in the cylinders after that?

| Apeks ATX50 / DS4 seems to be the best value. I've got one of these and an ATX200 and, having dismantled both last time I got bored, I can't see ANY differences in the second stage and only very subtle differences in the first stage. Knowing what I know now I'd have saved myself a few quid and just bought the '50. Mind you, the black pearl looks rather nice |
