Cool Pony Clamp Ripoff

Does anybody else think as I do that Pony clamps seem to be very expensive for what they are? Does anyone know of a sensibly priced one that functions reasonably well? Or maybe there are some plans out there for DIY enthusiasts to create their own, as I am thinking of doing (not so much because I can't afford to buy one, but I just don't like being done over!). Any & all ideas welcome!

rip off?

It depends on your point of view if they are a rip off or not - a lot of dive kit appears to be overpriced for what it is, but then the fact that a failure of the item could cause severe problems supports over-engineering it.

In the case of the pony clamp I reckon it could be quite a loss (both fiscally and in terms of redundant bailout) if it broke during a dive. If it broke when you were using the pony, it could be fatal.

That said, a lot of people seem to move through the pony stage into the twinset stage so a lot of pony clamps come up for sale with only a few dives on them. Like Fiona's. So buy Fiona's and save yourself some money! (or look on eBay for Pony Clamps!)

Hi.

I don't know if this is even relevant but as I did not know what a Pony Clamp looked like I googled and came up with this:
http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/S...5+1144714 158

Any use...?

I bought G-Snap clamps from Portland Oceaneering. I like them because they are well made and quick to fit/remove. They are not cheap (about £55 IIRC) but you have to bear in mind it's a niche market and so you will pay more as there are not the economies of scale that other equipment enjoys. Also a lot of these items have a military grade hard coat, I believe, which makes them more expensive.

Hi saltrock,
I agree, the costs of clamps is well OTT, but I got a second hand `metalsub' one from ebay for £30, best money I've spent in a while, very easy to use!

Good luck with ya search

if you want an inexpensive way of rigging your pony, then you can make a home-made stage strap rig with 2 boltsnaps, a bit of nylon rope and a jubilee clip

there's a thread/pic of how to do this somewhere on YD... sorry don't have the link to hand...

I stumbled across a CD pony clamp attached to a pony 2nd hand.
Pony was 2.5 years old, just passed first viz test with flying colours.
£60 the lot. Took it and ran....
New ones are horiffically expensive.
