Are agir valves 'balenced'
now excuse my stupidity, but my understanding of balanced valves (mde?) is that regardless of fill pressure, the valve should take the same effort to turn.

The Agir valves on my twinset are difficult to turn when full, and spin easily with less than 100bar. Are the agir valves balanced or am I just in need of lubing up??

If you mean in the same way as an MDE valve, then the answer is no they're not "balanced".

Although rumour had it (while back) that Tord was working on something similar with the Agir manifolds, I don't know what came of that idea / rumour.

You can make them balanced by carefully cutting a slot down the side of the seat plug. What also affects the turning force is the bearing material and area that the stem is forced onto by the pressure.

As you've already suggested, the AGIR valves are not balanced - certainly not in the traditional sense anyway. By the sounds of it, your valves have simply become gunked up and need a clean and relubing. Once that's done, they'll run lovely and smooth again!

Hmm, now here's a twist...

I've just opened up one of the valves on my Heiser twinset and I noticed this...



See that little black hole? That's the hole that *balances* this particular valve. Well I'll be jiggered - it seems that we can add DIRZone valves to the list of fully balanced valves!!!! Would someone care to open up an AGIR valve and see if it too has this little hole?
