pressure gauge question

hi folks,
my sunnto pressure gauge face has a crack across the middle approx 1 cm starting from the central brass pin for the needle, now my question is this,as i have used it prior to noticing this, can i presume, that there must be an internal "face",which is pressurised, and the one that has the small crack,is a protective "face" only.
cheers,
Fraser.

Yes. They'd be pretty brave to put 230 Bar+ behind a bit of glass.

If you think about it, a couple of square inches of glass with that pressure behind it would be resisting (or trying to resist) around 6000 lbs, or about 2.7 tonnes of force.

Conventional SPGs (ie not air-int computers) are simply a bourdon tube, a thin copper tube in a 3/4 circle. When you apply pressure to the internal surfaces via the HP hose, it straightens out a bit, which pushes the spodrod against the giggle pin (making this bit up) which deflecxts the needle. You read the pressure indicated on the card.

BACK

FRONT (this reads both pressure & vacuum but the principles the same)

If the copper tube ruptures, the face could, I always reckon, blow out, which is why I still hold it away from anywhere sensitive when I turn the air on.

Seeing how simple it is makes you realise why you should only trust em to + or - 10 Bars.

There's the glass and then the space where the needle moves over the dial (unpressuried). The glass is strong enough (in theory) to protect the air space behind it to a certain (stated) pressure. If your glass is cracked then the strength of the glass is compromised and I'd suggest you replace it.

You could get several years of service out of it but I personally wouldn't chance it.
