I'm not sure that it can, but I'm not sure that you'd need to. My first set of regs after qualifying were the MK25s in the top pic. They needed a bit if tuning after I got them but have performed beautifully ever since. I have dived them right the way through winter in both salt and fresh water.

When I started building my twinset, I aquired a set like the bottom picture with the 'fins'. I believe these are supposed to stop freeflows in very cold water. However, I still use my original reg as my primary reg and haven't had any problem. There doesn't seem to me to be any difference in performance between the two.

Did you tune them to give an easier breathe or stiffen them up?

I am trying to put "my 1st twinset" together. I was thinking the older Mk25 would be fine and then put onto "my 1st stage bottle" when that time comes.

I just wondered if the AF parts could be retro-fitted

Yes you can change them to the newer version, but as the lady says, there is no need. IIRC it would cost you about £30-40 but you would see very little difference in performance.

Cheers, ant

pm nickB ... he is the authority on this .... I think the answer is yes ... just a matter of buying the parts ... there were some internal changes too......but the old MK25 works fine ..... as does the older MK20 [subject to proper servicing]

I had a freeflow in Wastwater in March 2003. My LDS tuned them for me.

I now have two MF25AF first stages (the newer version with the fins). One I use on my twins, the other is on my stage. Overkill for a stage, but I had it rigged for singles diving before I bought the stage and thought I'd get better use out of it on my deco bottle. I toyed with the idea of using both the MK25AFs on my twinset just for the 'look' factor, but I've just kept using my original regs instead.

1st stages are 1st stages, generally performance will come down to how good (or bad) your 2nd stage is that you put on it. As long as the IP can be set easily then it makes no real difference what you use for performance. Obviously, reliability things like freezing, balanced/unbalanced, etc., are not included in that sweeping statement.

I use one of the "before" shot regs on my deeper stage bottles, no problems whatsoever other than the size of the fecker.

Cheers,

Stuart

If and when this goes on to a deco stage, it will be used from 21m and upwards, so perfomance at depth isn't really a major concern.

At the moment it won't be used any deeper than 35m ish.

Perhaps I should just get it serviced and use it as is.
