Question Dacor Viper - Mares MV

The missus has a Dacor Viper as a back up reg. She really likes the shape and all the other stuff and is happy with the reg. However it has a tendency to hiss. If you adjust the lever it will stop but after a while the hiss comes back and you need to adjust it again. I've had the same issue with the previous one (which was nicked).

Its never actually free flowed but this is the fear. I guess I could slack it off enough that its more or less impossible, but that would increase the cracking pressure too much for a backup IMHO.

I've had a look to see if the model is still around and it is now the Mares MV and only available as an octopus 2nd.

Anyway the question (jeez I ramble on - sorry its my age) is that I see the purge button has changed now. Does anyone know if this is due to the fault I have described (so I can buy a new one to solve the issue).

If you remove the purge button and diaphragm the reg is fine - the diaphragm seems to me to foul the lever and this is the issue. Maybe Mares sorted this in the new model, maybe not.

Any views welcome - I don't want to bin a reg that the missus likes so much, equally I don't want to buy new bits that make jack difference...

Thanks in advance, all-knowing YD massive

    Chris

Chatting to the repair bloke at Caperwray about these regs, and he reckons that a spring needs changing in them, The new Mares version already has it done. A customer of his told us that it is a much improved reg after this change. He too was worried about free flow.

How long have you had the reg?

The second stage valve seat does get an impression in it which will move the lever up and so produce the hiss. However, once the impression is formed you should not have to adjust it again.

If you need to keep adjusting the lever and removing the cover stops the hiss then perhaps the cover is starting to sag inwards.....only guessing.

I do, hence the question - that's my guess too and why I thought/think the new covers are a different design.

I have solved my own mystery.

The poppet holder rotates slightly and as the lever is attached to this it also twists (relative to the diaphragm). Short of glueing the damn thing in place I cannot see a solution.

The issue is that I have fitted a short Halcyon hose and it is a bit tighter than the OE and so the poppet tube is subject to more turning force than it should be. Its the missus' backup reg so no chance to go back to the original hose

Looking for a new 2nd now......
