    First try with a Twinset

    Hi
I am a PAOW diver with 100 UK dives, I have been diving for coming up to 3 years and fancy a dabble with a Twinset.

At this point in my diving career I do not want to splash out on a load of new gear as the most demanding diving I do is up to 30M with my regular buddy. I simply wish to carry on with the mainstay of my diving which is in puddles a couple of times a month, shore diving and about a dozen boat dives a year but feel the independent twins may offer me more safety and give me some more experience.

I already have 2 x 12l Faber cylinders, 2 set of Apeks Reg’s with FSR 1st stages(1 main & 1 for my pony) and I currently dive with a Buddy Trident Wing on my single setup of a 12L & pony.

My question is this, I am after some information / opinion on diving Independent 12L Faber’s with the above kit, I have bought some Buddy Bands and I know I will need another SPG & maybe different length hoses?

What is the best way to set them up (any pictures would be appreciated), hose routing, length & what from which post??

How much weight will I need to drop over the single setup (I use 12kg on a single & pony)???

I do plan to undertake the Advanced Nitrox & Extended range at some point in the future but in the mean time would like to get used to diving with Twins for a bit before undertaking these courses……

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Gary

FSRs route quite nicely - it's what I use on my twins. I turn them sideways so that the environmental seals face inwards, then run primary reg on a 2m hose, and wing inflator from the right post (as you wear them). Backup reg and suit inflation are on the left post. I've no pictures of mine, but there's some good pictures here, unfortunately using DS4 first stages.

I dive twindies all the time and with that kit list you have there is no
problem putting together exactly that. The biggest hurdle is usually
adapting an existing BC without buying a new one, but with the Trident
    you've got that sorted

My advice until you've used it for a bit is to keep to a similar config to
what you have on a single and you wont need any new hoses.

Put an octopus on the left post and feed it left.
Run the primary from the same left post over your shoulder to the right.
Run a primary from the right post and run it right.

You now have two regs over your right shoulder and a yellow occi as per
normal on the left (NB: if you usually stow it on the rt it has to be moved
because 3 regs on rt would be a bit confusing).

The two regs that come over your shoulder should be recognisably different
so you know what one is from what cylinder. That could be by using a
totally different type or as easy as using a clear comfybite on one and a
    black standard Apeks on another.

If you are wondering about SPG's think Inspiration CCR and have two
single gauges under each shoulder strap. Look down and an instant check
    of what you've got.

The reg from the left cylinder needs to be clipped off or necklaced. You
can use a bit of bungy for this.

    Ok so in use.

If you are using the twins for redundancy, you'll only need to swap from
rt post to left once to gain 70 bar in each (same gas as a single 12).
If you want to extend your bottom time you swap again and take 70 bar
    out of rt.

This means that there is always 70 bar more in the left cylinder and you
always have 70 bar reserve in the rt with minimal reg swaps.

    But .............

If the poo hits and assuming the rt cylinder is no good, you can still access
the left cylinder even if your buddy is also using it

Ok you might carry on like this or you might then go long hose and ditch
the occi, but it's a good way to get into it at the start without adding too
    many new hurdles.

This is how mine were set up when I had them... I moved on exactly the same as you to Twindies.
