Hi all,

This may sound a little stupid, but I bought some new cylinders the other day mail order and well, have just looked at another thread about cylinder stickers.

My cylinders have no air, so do I need to have them tested prior to filling or should they have come with a sticker with test dates on it?

If I recall they where made this year.

If they're new you don't need to get them tested.

I'm assuming you've bought them for use with air? If that is the case, they don't need any test sticker as all the info will be stamped on the shoulder of the bottle.

Just go and get a fill and they should be fine.

Of course, if they have "Air" stamped on the bottle, they CANNOT be used for Nitrox, since it isn't air..

Sorry Dominic should have been clearer "air" isn't stamped into the bottle's skin.

But that's what I'll be using them for, but thanks I didn't know that they done that, i though it was left to us to display the gas within.

Question First Cylinders, what would you recommend?

Hi all

I'm a long way off investing in cylinders (no point until I have transport sorted), but curiousity drives me to ask this question anyway.

Would you reccomend anything more than a single to a new-to-UK diver? (note not new-to-diving)

From the various threads I have read, it appears that quite alot of people eventually go to twins, so what is the logical first step?

Cheers

Conor

I'd say a single 12 now, twins later (if you choose to go that route) and keep the single for whipping into the 12s between dives.

I reckon it really depends on what type of diving you are doing. I reckon your options are:
  • Single 12s or 15s. Good for general diving but not deep as you don't have redundancy
  • Singles + Pony. Have some redundancy
  • Single with two first stages & second stages. Used more in Europe than UK
  • Twin set. More often used in UK. I'm not the best person to ask why but sure you'll get plenty of opinions.
I personally would work on to a single + pony, but as I said depends on your diving as well.

I chose single 12, but I'd but I'd buy 2 of them, that way you're not rushing around for fills at lunchtime and you can twin them up if you want.

You missed twin 10's like 7's only bigger
I suspect most of us have gone single 12 then added a pony then gone twins, 10's or 12's some have gone twin 7's.
Why not get two 12's now, then you can dive them as singles, or double up as indies or manifold later assuming your bcd/wing can take them. Or are you going to replace that later too!
I'd get a pony as well for immediate redundancy and then use as a deco stage later possibly. Buying two 12's now means you have a matched pair for later, else you'll need to get a matching 12 later which might be awkward.
Not initially the cheapest option, but maybe in the long run.

Rgds
Matt
