I´m interested in buying one of those Dolphins, but unsure if it´s the right machine for me. How many have surely died because of machine failure?

None, they all died because they screwed up.
If you want info on what might be the best machine for you we need to know what sort of diving you do now and what sort of diving you plan to do in the next 4-5 years.
I would be hard pushed to think of a reason for recommending a Dolphin. Nothing particularly wrong with the design its just a very limited operational envelope. Using the same type of system you would get much better performance out of a KISS or Revo type MCCR.

My wife did a course. After a week of diving on the forerunner of the Dolphin, she asked me what was the point of SCR? I was hard pressed to give her an answer and I was being paid by Draeger as a consultant at the time! (I usually agree with Mark too, but I usually only post on his threads if I don't!)
I regularly contribute to Diver, DYK (Sweden & Denmark), Undercurrent and other diving magazines but my views expressed here are independent.

out of interest what training is needed to operate a SCR?

Life is not measured by the amount of breaths you take, but the amount of times your breath is taken away.
Sticking with the theme of non electronic systems...

Very clever idea with the scrubber 20Kg all in which is suitable for travel. Inject on the dill and the 02. And God forbid you should decide helium is a good idea at 40m or that 50m or more is not so bad either, its trimix capable and works to 80m in standard trim. Unit available from Geneva.

Yawn...heard it all before... mainly from those on ccr or oc. :-)
Look at the unit, check the course contents and do a try-dive on it, then decide if it is what you want to dive with.
yes it takes longer to set up, but it give me up to 3 hours diving a day with no faffing in between dives.
Once you are familiar with it, it takes about 20min to assemble in the morning and maybe 30mins to wash out at night and pack away. I know OC divers who spend longer!
It is lighter than my old twin set and more fun to dive. I rarely want to dive below 40m any more, so the depth limit is not a problem.
Oh - and it is as safe as the person it is strapped to.
Phew - glad I got that off my chest.
