I have no doubt whatsoever that Matt is genuine, please don't think that, but I don't randomly give to charities on my doorstep, or on the street without being sure who they are, how the money is spent and regulated etc, so why should I not put the same standards against those who ask me for cash over the t'interweb?

| Lou, Why not PM matt and ask your questions? I believe that the proceeds from any sales are going towards incidental expenses and the like for Matt to achieve his dream of being able to scuba dive in open water. As he is based in the USA, he is obviously not subject to the Charities Act as is the case in the UK. I have simply ordered some of his wristbands as they are only available in bulk orders of 20, and am distributing them here to anyone who wants to help with the logistics of assisting someone less fortunate than themselves have a glimpse of what we can enjoy so easily. I believe that many people on YD are interested in what Matt is trying to achieve and would wish to give a little to help. I personally don't think that Matt is trying to pull a scam, and I am trying to do a little something to assist him. I am sorry that you obviously feel that there is something underhand in all of this. Once I have sold 20 wristbands, I have effectively covered the initial donation to purchase the bands. Everything after that will be donated to Matt and I will post the paypal receipt for all to see. I am simply using the YD Social Events and Charity Fundraising portion of YD to ask for people to buy and donate. Obviously the moderators of the forum don't mind this act, as I have not been warned about this action. Stu! |

| Stu You have taken it a bit worngly. As I said in my previous post, I do not doubt for one moment that Matt is genuine, but I truly can't see where it says what the money is to be used for. It was only a simple query, but there doesn't seem to be a simple answer. i am sure that Matt will answer when he comes on, but I thought you might know - hence my question here. I respect what you are doing and why you are doing it, and again, I do not think that there is any scam running. However I would advise caution over sending anyone any money from the internet and I will stand by that. If it were me offering anything from a charity I would ensure that these things were clear to all up front, to cover myself, if nothing else. Anyway, it isn't that important and I am sorry that you took it in a way it was not meant. Best regards Lou

| Strikes me that it was a reasonable question. I didn't buy one for exactly the same reason - couldn't see where the cash went. Good for Lou for asking rather than just moving on like I did. If an answer appears, then maybe I'll buy one too. Again, no bad feelings, no accusations, nothing but admiration for Matt. Lou and I can't be the only ones who want to know where money goes before spending it though! Ian |

| Hi Stu. I didn't read anything in Lou's post that suggested she thought it was a scam. You asked for people to contribute money towards a charitable cause, all she did was ask what the money was going to be used for. Nothing wrong with what you asked (and well done for trying to to help Dive safe Darren

| Good points - well made - and apologies if I sounded a bit "short" Lou. The donations for the Diving a Dream wristbands are made to Project Innerspace - http://www.projectinnerspace.org I believe that this organisation is properly registered in the USA, but to be honest, I just pushed the cash their way to fund Matt's efforts. I cannot provide a breakdown of costs/ donations etc. Information about the relevent US law governing their charities can be found here - http://www.irs.gov/charities/charita...=96099,00.html I guess I am just being a bit of a go-between here. No doubt Matt will be able to shed some light on things in due course. Last edited by stewbie : 10-04-06 at 04:15 PM. |
