Scubatrust dive marathon

SAM’S GREAT SCUBA MARATHON SUCCESS
Just a few weeks ago we approached you for sponsorship pledges to help Sam Lucas[age 19 and has autism] of Dover to raise much needed funds by diving for the SCUBA TRUST the national charity that that makes SCUBA diving available to people of all abilities. The underwater marathon took place as per plan on Saturday 23 rd June at HORSEA ISLAND Dive Centre Port Solent nr, Portsmouth. This centre is an unusual sea water canal/lake dug in the early 20th century as a secret naval torpedo testing course. Some 1350 yards in length. the marathon event required the team to complete a total of 35 lengths of the course to make the 26mile 385 yard distance . The team numbered about 30 divers all of varied levels of qualification and ability . Sam buddied up with new Scuba Trust voluntary instructor Dai and together they proceed up the course being guided by a jackstay line that is fixed to the lake bottom , the visibility being at best not much greater than one metre . The poor visibility did not stop hawk eyed Sam from salvaging several interesting items from the bottom including a lost divers knife. Sam and Dai took 67 minutes dive time on there first run. Having completed this they returned to the head of the course changed spent air cylinders for full and set off again .This time despite further reduced visibility due to other divers activity Sam and Dai knocked off 4 minutes of their previous time.
By early afternoon the team knocked off the target 35 lengths, without any adverse incident . This then saw some of the more lively team members doing additional dives to better their previous times or beat the days best run time of an incredible 27 minutes. Who says scuba is not a competitive activity , other team members just did the extra length just for the hell of it. But rattled up a grand distance in excess of 30 miles underwater by the time the record book closed… Next time lets make it the Channel.
Of course Sam’s success is not only the physical feat of the dives but in the funds he has raised for the Scuba Trust through your generous pledges. The best estimates is the whole event will raise a total £5000 towards the Trusts equipment replacement fund. We are proud to declare that Sam’s part in the event will amount to around £400 …a magnificent result and tribute to your generosity.

We sincerely thank you if you have already redeemed your pledges and look forward to receiving any amounts outstanding…Our thanks extend to all the friends who took on the role of getting pledges from their own networks .
Although the event is over any additional contributions or donations towards Sam’s fundraising for SCUBA TRUST would be received with great appreciation
