Well the days of accepting the Kings shilling whilst being drunk as a lord have gone so yes joining is voluntary. Having a large portion of your skull and brain tissue removed by a grenade isn't necessarily quite so voluntary, despite accepting the possibility of risk when you sign up.

Because there are those who do volunteer to serve it means that it is unnecessary to force the unwilling to do so. Perhaps you owe some thanks for that.

Jim,

I don't doubt that ... my view, like Silvafish's, is that as a diving forum there are more "related" charities that could benefit our sport.

wot he said.

have we done the Scuba trust before?

you know , the one that helps disabled people who have been told no they couldn't possibly dive, dive.

i think that makes a good one.

Having had a wee think about this and seen the emotions running high already perhaps it would be better if we plumped for something more 'marine based' and related to diving.

As a note of moderation, can I ask any debates on the rights, wrongs or otherwise of Iraq, the UK's/USAs involvement in it, conscription, volunteering for the military, etc etc are taken to a new thread and we keep this discussion to the sort of charity we'd like YD to support next year.

Thanks
Mal

Agreed but the thread is not about selecting a diving or marine environment related charity, it is about selecting a charity full stop. That opens the door to suggestions of all kinds. The point i was making was that Silvafish's post infered, whether knowingly or not, that wounded service personnel were less worthy because they volunteered to serve and had therefore contributed to their current circumstances. That is an attitude i find abhorrent.

Jim

Can i suggest that after a suitable period the nominations are put onto a new poll thread. Or perhaps a new poll be conducted beforehand on whether charity nominations are open category or purely diving related. It might serve to avoid some angst!
